About this role


At Volker Stevin, our Quality Control Lab Technologist (QC Lab Tech) plays a key role in ensuring the success of construction projects by providing prompt and accurate test results while promoting a strong safety culture within the team. You will also contribute by coordinating with asphalt plant operators, paving crews, and crushing crews providing critical feedback and understanding of asphalt, aggregate, test results, and construction practices. Reporting to the Quality Control Supervisor, the QC Lab Tech supports quality control testing for aggregate and asphalt production. This role is responsible for conducting laboratory testing, obtaining field samples, analyzing materials, maintaining equipment, and ensuring all testing activities comply with company standards and industry specifications.

 

The successful candidate will play a critical role in supporting plant operations and delivering high-quality materials to project sites.

 

How You'll Add Value

 

Aggregate Testing

  • Perform quality control testing on crushed and stockpile materials.
  • Conduct stockpile sampling and analysis.
  • Compile and report test results to the Aggregate Superintendent.

Asphalt Testing

  • Conduct quality control testing on asphalt, including moisture, temperature, asphalt cement (A/C), gradation, air voids, and density.
  • Collect plant and field samples and prepare materials for laboratory analysis.
  • Perform plant moisture testing.
  • Follow approved testing procedures and applicable asphalt specifications.
  • Conduct bin and midstream sampling.
  • Communicate test results and observations to the Asphalt Superintendent.
  • Support asphalt coring activities as required.

Laboratory & Equipment Management

  • Maintain inventory of laboratory equipment and supplies.
  • Ensure all testing equipment is properly calibrated and functional.
  • Keep laboratory and equipment clean, organized, and operational.
  • Ensure appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is worn at all times.
  • Assist with training and onboarding of part-time staff.

Production & Plant Communication

  • Monitor production tonnage and outgoing material volumes.
  • Provide moisture data and production feedback to plant operations.
  • Monitor temperature and asphalt cement adjustments.
  • Coordinate sampling as required.

Customer & Team Support

  • Maintain a professional approach when working with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate a proactive, solution-oriented mindset.
  • Communicate workload priorities and potential conflicts.
  • Escalate issues when immediate action is required.

 


What you Bring

  • Engineering Technologist diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience in aggregate and asphalt testing an asset.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Willingness to work extended hours and weekends as required.
  • Basic First Aid certification is an asset.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license with a satisfactory driver’s abstract.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
