The Chesterfield-Colonial Heights Department of Social Services is hiring a Lead Family Services Specialist II -Child Protective Services In-Home.  Our priority is working with families to get them on track for a better life.  We serve as a community resource, while protecting and assisting our community’s most vulnerable members by providing solutions to break the chain of poverty, abuse and addiction. What You Do and How You Do It:

In this role, you'll have the chance to provide case management for a small (and based on agency need) caseload of In-Home and Family Support case types that are transferred from CPS Investigations and Family Assessment for continued monitoring for families experiencing abuse/neglect, provide prevention services to family and respond to referrals alleging child abuse/neglect in Chesterfield County and City of Colonial Heights.

You’ll play a vital role in welcoming and onboarding new team members, stepping in to provide supervision when the main supervisor is away, and provide support across the Child Welfare continuum thought the tasks and responsibilities you will be assigned.

But that’s not all! You’ll ensure data compliance (because who doesn’t love a good spreadsheet or utilizing various computer systems to track data?), support your fellow staff members, and help steer the ship by planning and developing policies that ensure best practice and make our services even better. Staying up to date on Virginia’s policies in Child Protective Services, In-Home and Children’s Services is important part of your role, so you’ll always be in the know.

In this role, you’ll provide on-call supervision, represent our Department on the Family Assessment and Planning Team (FAPT) through Comprehensive Services Office, complete case reviews to ensure compliance and assist the supervisor in monitoring overall team performance management and data analysis. You will oversee budget lines that assist in support children and families impacted by abuse/neglect to maintain safety and aid in their overall stability. You will have the opportunity to take part in training sessions that are all about professional growth and enhancing your skills.

Here's What You Need:

Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a Human Services field or minimum of a Bachelor's degree in any field with a minimum of two years of appropriate and related experience in a Human Services area (Section 22VAC40-670-20 of the Administrative Code of Virginia) required; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.

We’re Looking for Ideal Candidates Who Have:

  • Considerable experience in assigned program area/human services programs and completion of required training programs with work experience in a leadership role preferred.

  • Possession of a BSW or MSW degree preferred.

  • Minimum of three years of child welfare experience in Virginia public social services preferred.

  • Experience in case management, compiling reports, correspondence and data preferred.

  • Knowledge of trauma-informed practices preferred.

  • Excellent leadership skills

  • Ability to supervise staff effectively

  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with a solution-focused approach

  • Exceptional engagement, assessment, and interviewing skills

  • Confidence and assertiveness, especially when faced with challenges

  • Independent thinking and decision-making abilities

  • Strong organizational, time management, and computer skills

  • Effective conflict resolution skills

  • Good personal boundaries and a focus on self-care

Current valid driver's license and good driving record required. Based on the Virginia DMV point system, record must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points within the twenty-four months preceding the anticipated hire date, or one major violation of six demerit points within the preceding thirty-six months. Out of state driving records must be obtained by applicant and presented at time of interview. Records must reflect at least three years of history and be dated within thirty days of interview date.  Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required. A Chesterfield County application is also required and must be submitted online by the deadline. 

This position is considered Critical Safety Sensitive and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing. The use of medical marijuana for this position is prohibited.

This position is part of an Emergency Shelter Team during times of natural disaster, reporting to shelter duty as required.

You must be committed to serving families and some of our families have experienced trauma. You will assist in the professional development of staff. You have the power to create positive change and have a direct impact on the Child Protective Services Program.  You must be flexible, comfortable with taking a leadership role, and being a champion for interventions that are implemented. You will work outside of normal business hours which includes providing on-call supervision for emergencies 24 hours a day on a rotating schedule including weekends and holidays.
