About this role

The Polysom Tech Trainee position is an entry-level training position to provide safe, reliable, diagnostic sleep testing and effective respiratory care as an advanced practitioner for neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations, in accordance to discipline training level, Clinical Practice Guidelines, hospital standards, guidelines and protocols, as well as to serve as a sleep medicine technical resource and educator for patients, caregivers, hospital staff and students under the direct supervision of a licensed technologist.

Develops competency in and performs the basic polysomnographic testing and associated patient care & treatment interventions under the direct supervision of a registered polysomnographic technologist (RPSGT).

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire: Current AHA BLS Certification 

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment: 
Current licensure with the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Polysomnographic Technologist (to be obtained within 18 months of hire) 
Satisfy the requirements for one of the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT)
Examination eligibility pathways during the first 18 months of hire.
RPSGT Pathway 2: Healthcare Credential. For candidates or soon-to-be graduates working in the field with at least 546 hours of clinical experience, who have another healthcare credential.
RPSGT Pathway 4: Focused Training. For candidates working in the field with at least 819 hours of clinical experience, who have completed STAR-designated Focused education, or a combination of Self Study and Focused 2 education.
Current RPSGT (to be obtained within 18 months of hire) 
Current CPR certification as required by practice setting 

Experience REQUIRED: 
Entry level PC and MS Windows knowledge 

Experience PREFERRED: 
At least one (1) year of work experience in a health care setting. 
Experience that has satisfied the eligibility requirements for the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT) 

Education/training REQUIRED:  
High school diploma or college transcript.
Satisfy the requirements for one of the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT) Examination eligibility pathways during the first 18 months of hire.

Education/training PREFERRED: 
Education, training and/or experience that has satisfied the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT) 

Independent action(s) required: 
All entry-level trainees must identify themselves to patients as a student or trainee in polysomnographic technology in accordance with Virginia state law. 
Assists with the completion all independent actions listed for the Licensed: RPSGT (no RRT) under the direct oversight and training of a licensed, RPSGT credentialed sleep technologist as training and competency permit.

This position requires schedule flexibility and adaptability to accomplish the goals and mission of the health system to meet the needs of the patients we serve.
