About this role

The AI Product Manager - Clinical Innovation will spearhead the development and execution of AI capabilities across VCU Health’s clinical product portfolio. This role bridges technology, clinical practice, and operations, ensuring that AI products deliver measurable value, align with institutional goals, and adhere to the highest ethical and regulatory standards.

Leveraging clinical and informatics background and a deep understanding of clinical workflows, this position will help own and advance AI portfolio, including ML model governance, GenAI tools, EPIC integrated-AI tools and development of new clinical AI solutions. Through product leadership and clinical judgment, this position will ensure AI tools are safe, trusted, and embedded effectively into care delivery.

Essential Job Statements

Clinical AI Product Ownership

Act as the product owner for a subset of Epic-integrated AI tools, including predictive models and GenAI-enabled workflows.

Define clinical intent, success metrics, and guardrails for AI products in partnership with clinicians and operational leaders.

Translate clinical needs into clear product requirements and acceptance criteria.

Epic ML & GenAI Governance

Lead governance activities for assigned Epic ML models and GenAI tools, including:

Clinical appropriateness and safety review

Monitoring of performance, drift, and unintended consequences

Documentation for approvals, audits, and renewals

Serve as a clinical voice in enterprise AI governance forums.

Partner with compliance, privacy, and legal teams to ensure responsible AI use.

Development of New Clinical Models

Identify opportunities for new clinical ML models based on workflow gaps, quality metrics, or operational pain points.

Collaborate with AI engineering team on:

Feature selection and clinical logic

Model validation and interpretation

Defining deployment and monitoring plans

Support pilots and phased rollouts within Epic workflows.

Adoption, Change Management & Value Realization:

Partner with clinical champions to drive adoption and trust.

Lead training, communication, and feedback efforts for assigned products.

Track outcomes including quality, efficiency, clinician experience, and equity.

Present insights and recommendations to product and clinical leadership.

Employment Qualifications

Required Education: Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Biomedical Informatics, or related field.

Preferred Education: Clinical degree or advanced certification in Clinical Informatics, Health Informatics, or related discipline.

Minimum Qualifications

Years and Type of Required Experience: 5+ years of experience in clinical informatics, healthcare IT, or analytics, preferably within an academic health system. Demonstrated experience working with Epic EHR, including clinical workflows and decision support. Experience participating in or supporting AI/ML or advanced analytics initiatives. Strong written and verbal communication skills with clinical and technical audiences.

Preferred: Experience with Epic Cognitive Computing or Epic-integrated predictive models. Familiarity with GenAI tools in clinical settings. Exposure to AI/ML governance, quality, or safety review processes. Prior experience translating clinical workflows into technical or product requirements. Interest in product management career progression.

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: Ability to own multiple AI use cases or models end-to-end with limited supervision. Independently lead clinical discussions and governance reviews. Ability to proactively identify improvements and new opportunities. Mentor junior team members or informatics colleagues as needed.

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred: Displays intellectual curiosity and integrity.
