The Courier Journal, part of the USA TODAY Network, is seeking an assistant sports editor and newsroom leader with a proven ability to help us own a highly competitive and critical part of our coverage while helping elevate the overall trajectory of the Sports team.  
 
The Louisville area has some of the highest-profile coverage opportunities in the country: national championship-caliber college basketball programs; SEC and ACC football; and the world-famous Kentucky Derby.  
 
We seek an assistant sports editor who understands how to drive real-time coverage across digital platforms and help develop reporters. The ideal candidate understands sports coverage is more than X's and O's. She/he wants our Sports Team to be able to tell stories that will help educate and inform sports fans in metro Louisville and around the commonwealth.  
 
Passion, leadership, coaching and strategic planning are vital to this position's success.  
 
Our ideal editor will embrace working side-by-side with reporters to elevate their work, and with fellow editors to help connect the stories we tell to the people who live in our community and love the teams in Louisville and the surrounding area. Copy editing experience is a must as is a willingness to write as needed. The position would include regular evening work during coverage of events. 
 
The Courier Journal is an 11-time Pulitzer Prize-winning news organization in a metro area known for its nationally recognized chefs and restaurants; vibrant music scene, including the Forecastle music festival; world-class bourbon distilleries; and Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby.
