Job Description: Patient Access Representative at UPMC

UPMC is seeking full-time Patient Access Representatives to work in patient registration at the front desk and bedside in the Emergency Departments at UPMC hospitals. This entry-level role is an excellent opportunity for those looking to start or expand their career in healthcare.

*Training is offered for this position and includes a 4-day Medipac training followed by hands on training/shadowing.

Responsibilities:

As a Patient Access Representative, your typical day will involve working with patients and family members as they arrive at the Emergency Room. You will be one of the first UPMC team members they interact with. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Obtaining or updating necessary demographic and insurance-related information.
  • Confirming insurance eligibility.
  • Collecting and recording patient payments, including co-payments, co-insurance, and deductibles.
  • Obtaining applicable signatures for consent to treat and financial responsibility, along with signatures on any required forms.

Work Schedule:

In this role, you will travel to any UPMC Emergency Department throughout Allegheny County and Cranberry. You will work a variety of shifts (daylight, evening, and overnight hours) on various days. Weekend and holiday availability is required. Some flexibility around locations and shifts may be available on a case-by-case basis. After six months of floating to various hospitals, there is the potential to be placed at one Emergency Department.



  • Completion of high school diploma or equivalent.

Clearances/Licensure: (to be acquired after offer acceptance and before start date - we will provide instructions on how to obtain)

  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
