About this role

UVA Environmental Resources is seeking an Environmental Inspector to join our team. The Environmental Inspector will provide technical assistance focused on stormwater management and pollution prevention practices in facility construction, operations and maintenance projects, and in support of UVA’s Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) permit program. The Environmental Inspector will perform multiple tasks that include inspecting construction sites and post-construction stormwater management facilities; providing guidance to staff and contractors on pollution prevention practices; and investigating potential illicit discharges. Other duties may also be assigned. 

Environmental Resources provides university-wide services pertaining to permit and compliance management for multiple regulated sectors including air, construction activity, oil storage, stormwater, and wastewater. Environmental Resources works closely with the Facilities Management Department who is responsible for the day-to-day operation, repair, and maintenance of UVA's buildings, infrastructure, and grounds as well as other University-owned and leased properties. Responsibilities 

  • Communicate effectively and work in a team environment 
  • Analyze problems and develop effective solutions 
  • Apply knowledge of laws, regulations, policies, and procedures to real-world situations 
  • Understand natural systems (stormwater, soil, waterways) and the human impacts 
  • Maintain detailed records of inspection activities, including use of UVA’s project and asset management software systems 
  • This job requires obtaining and maintaining a dual Erosion & Sediment Control (E&SC) and Stormwater Management (SWM) Inspector's certification from the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) as soon as possible and within one year of the start date. Continued employment is contingent on this certification. 

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in related field (civil or environmental engineering or relevant science-based field, preferred). 
  • Experience: At least one year of experience in environmental science-related fields. Additional experience may be considered in lieu of degree. 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Hold DEQ-issued certification as an E&SC and SWM Inspector. 
  • Two or more years of experience conducting erosion and sediment control and/or stormwater control measure (aka BMP) inspections. 

Physical Demands 

The Environmental Inspector will work extensively on construction sites and outdoor environments. The candidate should be comfortable walking on uneven terrain and be able to perform manual labor related to removing lids from storm structures and carrying inspection-related tools. 

Anticipated Hiring Range: $66,000 - $77,000, commensurate with education and experience.

  • This position is based in Charlottesville, VA, and is eligible for a hybrid schedule with on-site presence as required for position, in accordance with UVA’s remote work guidelines.
