To enable this, Divisions are adding new divisional research officers to augment the expertise and bandwidth of existing highly skilled individuals already in place. The Division of the Vice-President, Research & Innovation (VPRI) will invite these individuals together into a community of practice.


Your opportunity:

The Office of the Vice Dean, Research & Health Science Education oversees all research undertaken for the Temerty Faculty of Medicine and coordinates with its counterparts at the affiliated hospital research institutes for clinical research. This includes: grant proposal development, administering internal funding allocations, collecting and reporting on research productivity metrics, and managing core research facilities.

The Strategic Research Development Officer will support the Office of the Vice Dean of Research & Health Science Education (RHSE). With a key mandate to advance research funding and impact, RHSE provides research development and administrative support to the research community at Temerty Faculty of Medicine. This position will provide editorial and programmatic supports to enhance research proposals and award nominations and work in collaboration with colleagues at the Division of the Vice-President Research & Innovation (VPRI) to maximize research funding, impact and productivity. With a strong understanding of federal, provincial and internal grants and awards and with a high level of analytical skills, you will foster positive relationships to support partnership development and research funding administration activities. You will be focusing on large network/partnership grants and priority awards & honours and broader research initiatives across TAHSN. You will also provide supplemental editorial support alongside our existing grants & awards editor position, for priority funding programs including a series of federal, provincial operating and infrastructure awards. Your background and experience supporting research initiatives will contribute to advancing the overall goals and initiatives.


Your responsibilities will include:

  • Coordinating and guiding applicants through various phases of the research funding application process, and drafting and editing funding proposals for priority funding programs and large institutional initiatives including CIHR Team Grants, SSHRC Partnership Grants, CRCs, CFIs or NIH
  • Drafting and presenting marketing and partnership plans and fostering relationships to promote research programs, opportunities and initiatives with a focus on large network/partnership grants and priority awards & honours
  • Analyzing the Faculty’s scientific expertise and technical capacities alongside the available funding opportunities to identify suitable research applicants for targeted grants
  • Developing and implementing plans that support the attainment of research awards and honours
  • Developing project schedules including milestones, critical path, timelines, deliverables, reporting and tracking status of partnership development initiatives
  • Providing education and outreach activities by writing and editing targeted communications such as press releases, producing promotional outreach materials and coordinating program and events calendars
  • Planning and estimating financial resources required for programs and/or projects

 

Essential Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in a related field or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum five (5) years’ of relevant work experience conducting research, analyzing, interpreting and reporting on results preferably within an academic environment
  • Experience in research administration, including managing grant proposal processes and reporting in a health-related or research institution, with a record of successful performance
  • Experience with the federal and provincial grant cycles and funding programs, including large infrastructure grants (CFI), Tri agency operating grants (CIHR/NSERC/SSHRC) and Canada research chairs (CRC)
  • Demonstrated experience with development of complex funding applications from drafting proposals and their associated budgets to submission and administration
  • Demonstrated experience in liaising with senior administrators, responding to and handling matters of a complex and sensitive nature
  • Demonstrated experience with drafting senior level documents including writing and editing
  • Demonstrated experience producing statistical and financial reports through metrics
  • Strong proficiency with personal computers and related software, including advanced proficiency in MS Word and Excel
  • Ability to write concise and informative reports and proposals
  • Ability to understand a complex relational database on research funding
  • Client-services oriented with demonstrated listening and critical thinking skills
  • Strong decision-making skills; superior planning and project management skills with a focus on executing and competing tasks under pressure and within deadlines
  • Ability to maintain a broad perspective; ability to foster and maintain effective relationships with all levels of faculty, staff, students, senior administration and external constituents
