Description:

 

Position Summary:

 

As an integral part of a highly collaborative and consultative team, the Senior Labour Relations Consultant is responsible for actively participating in the collective bargaining process and administering collective agreements while fostering a positive and constructive work environment and an engaged and productive workforce.

 

The incumbent will work closely with other members of the LR leadership team in helping to develop collective bargaining strategies and in providing advice to management and senior leaders on the interpretation and application of the collective agreements, the investigation and resolution of grievances and the administration of the grievance/arbitration process. This role is also responsible for providing advice and training to management and Human Resources regarding Labour Relations issues and legislation.

 

Qualifications Required:

 

Education: 

 

  • University degree required, preferably with a specialty in Industrial Relations;
  • Masters of Industrial Relations or other relevant advanced degree strongly preferred, or an acceptable equivalent of education and experience.

 

Experience: 

 

  • Seven (7) years progressively responsible experience in a professional Labour Relations capacity;
  • Broader public sector and higher education experience in particular would be an asset;
  • Extensive experience participating in collective bargaining, plus extensive collective agreement interpretation and advising along with grievance/arbitration process management experience;
  • Experience working with complex costing methodologies and dealing with complex pension and benefits issues are highly desirable;
  • Additional HR and/or line management experience is an asset.
  • Extensive knowledge of labour relations and related employment legislation and practice is necessary.

  • Demonstrated track record of effective negotiating skills in a multi-faceted and sophisticated environment required;
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, along with data analysis and computer literacy skills are necessary.
  • Consulting, mediation, and facilitation skills. Solid presentation and training capabilities.
  • Excellent judgement and relationship management skills.
  • Well-developed ability to persuade and gain consensus.
  • Proactive service orientation.
  • Awareness and appreciation of diversity.

  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal and listening skills; consulting, mediation and facilitation skills;
