Your opportunity:

The Department of Medicine (DOM) is one of the largest in North America, with 830 full-time faculty members, 1,000 postgraduate trainees, and 20 specialty and sub-specialty divisions located across six fully-affiliated hospitals, four community-affiliated hospitals and more than a dozen additional clinical practice sites. We are a powerhouse of medical research, with more than $162- million in annual research funding. This research generates new knowledge with the goal of meaningfully impacting internal medicine training and the care and health outcomes of patients and their families.

As the Finance Officer, you will play a critical role in supporting the financial integrity, sustainability, and operational effectiveness of the Department. You will steward complex funding portfolios, provide accurate analysis and reporting to inform decision-making, and ensure financial activities align with University policies and regulatory requirements. Your work will directly enable academic, clinical, and research leaders to plan effectively, manage resources responsibly, and advance the Department’s priorities, making a tangible impact on programs, faculty, and learners.



Your responsibilities will include:

 

  • Monitoring, recording, reconciling, and reporting on funding accounts for grants and contracts, including recording detailed transactions, processing accounts payable and receivable, expense reimbursements, stipends, and honoraria, and ensuring expenditures remain within budgeted allocations
  • Forecasting and planning financial activities and budgets involving multiple sources of revenue and/or recoveries, including preparing budget variance reports, financial summaries, and generating standard financial reports
  • Analyzing financial information to identify spending trends, discrepancies, and cost-saving opportunities, including comparing forecasted figures to actuals, conducting salary and benefit cost analysis, and making recommendations to inform budgetary decision-making
  • Supporting purchasing and procurement activities by acting as a first point of contact for purchasing enquiries, liaising with internal and external contacts, verifying supporting documentation, and ensuring compliance with purchasing and procurement policies and procedures
  • Ensuring the accurate and timely administration of financial processes, payroll, and HRIS data by verifying the accuracy and completeness of information, resolving data anomalies and discrepancies, following up on outstanding tasks, and liaising with internal contacts to resolve accounting, payroll, and/or HRIS processing issues
  • Applying the University Guide to Financial Management and other applicable policies, procedures, collective agreements, and regulatory requirements, including implementing process improvements, collecting required documentation, and ensuring provisions are applied appropriately

 

 

Essential Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor's Degree or acceptable combination of equivalent education and experience
  • Minimum three (3) years of recent and related financial administration experience in a complex post-secondary, healthcare, or research environment
  • Demonstrated experience monitoring, recording, reconciling, and reporting on funding accounts for grants and contracts
  • Experience with budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning, including monitoring expenditures to ensure alignment with budgeted allocations
  • Demonstrated experience analyzing financial data and producing reports, including identifying trends, discrepancies, and cost-saving opportunities
  • Experience processing and reconciling financial transactions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, expense reimbursements, and payroll-related transactions
  • Experience supporting purchasing and procurement activities, including verifying supporting documentation, ensuring approvals, and liaising with internal and external contacts
  • Demonstrated with enterprise financial/HR systems, including AMS suite applications, MROL, FIS, HRIS, and other SAP administrative tools
  • Advanced MS Office skills (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Access)
  • Ability to handle sensitive and/or confidential financial and payroll information with discretion and professionalism
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple deadlines and competing priorities
