About the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology

The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) is a dynamic and growing program within the Department of Medicine dedicated to excellence in patient care, research, and education. The Division includes more than 20 faculty and Advanced Practice Providers representing the full breadth of gastroenterology and hepatology specialties.

Faculty practices across four hospitals – Galveston, League City, Clear Lake, and Angleton Danbury – providing comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services, advanced endoscopic are, multidisciplinary management of complex liver disease.

Our ACGME-accredited Gastroenterology Fellowship Program trains nine fellows across three years, offering a broad and rigorous curriculum supported by committed faculty mentors and diverse clinical experiences. The Division also plays an active role in medical student and resident education, contributing to the academic mission of the institution.


Position Summary

UTMB is seeking a full-time physician at the rank of Associate Professor of Clinical Practice to serve as the Section Chief of Hepatology within the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. This position emphasizes high-quality liver-focused clinical care, leadership responsibilities in Hepatology, active participation in teaching, and engagement in the academic mission of the department. The successful candidate will join a team of faculty dedicated to advancing hepatology care, developing multidisciplinary liver programs, supervising procedural care, and participating in scholarly activities.


Essential Responsibilities

  • Serve as Section Chief of Hepatology, providing clinical and administrative leadership for the hepatology program, including program development, faculty mentorship, and coordination of multidisciplinary liver care.
  • Provide comprehensive outpatient and inpatient hepatology care, including management of cirrhosis, viral hepatitis, NAFLD/NASH, autoimmune liver diseases, hepatocellular carcinoma, and liver transplant evaluation and follow-up.
  • Perform and supervise liver-related procedures, including paracentesis, liver biopsy, and other hepatology interventions; participate in advanced endoscopic procedures (ERCP, EUS) as appropriate.
  • Supervise and teach medical students, residents, and fellows in both clinical and procedural hepatology training.
  • Participate in departmental and divisional quality improvement, patient safety, and evidence-based practice initiatives.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams—including surgery, oncology, radiology, and nutrition—for optimal patient outcomes.
  • Contribute to curriculum development, procedural training programs, and hepatology-focused academic initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications

  • MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school.
  • Board certified or board eligible in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology, with subspecialty training in Hepatology.
  • Eligible for medical licensure in the State of Texas.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Leadership experience in hepatology program development or section leadership.
  • Experience in an academic medical center or teaching environment.
  • Demonstrated involvement in scholarly activity, clinical research, quality improvement projects, or hepatology program development.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a collaborative, team-oriented approach.
