General Notes 

The Energy Institute (EI) at The University of Texas at Austin is seeking part-time Senior Student Associate undergraduate and graduate student workers for the 2025-26 school year to assist with communications, writing, social media, and administrative functions. 

EI facilitates interdisciplinary energy research and engagement across all colleges and departments at UT, helping to catalyze innovation by fostering strategic partnerships among experts in UT’s top-ranked programs—including engineering, business, geology, natural sciences, law, and public policy—and stakeholders in industry, government, and nonprofit sectors. 

Purpose 

The EI Senior Student Associate (EI SSA) team works closely with EI staff to assist in all areas of external relations, including communications, marketing/digital design, social media management, event/conference planning and support, and writing. The role will also assist with day-to-day office administration.  

Responsibilities 

  • Assist with EI’s monthly newsletter, including research, drafting copy, and creating the email within EI’s email platform

  • Assist with administration of EI’s weekly UT Energy Symposium speaker series, including communicating with speakers, publicizing the talks, updating the talk webpages, posting videos, and keeping track of the status of these tasks 

  • Assist with all aspects of EI’s events, including communications, materials, planning, logistics, and on-site support 

  • Assist with updating and reporting on EI’s websites and social media 

  • Support operation of the EI office 

Required Qualifications 

  • Graduate or upper-division undergraduate student in good academic standing, preferably in fields related to energy, communications, public policy, or business 

  • Ideal candidates are self-starters able to grasp complex subject matter quickly and work well with other student associate team members and EI staff 

  • Strong research and writing skills 

  • Experience with strategic engagement on social media platforms 

  • Experience with email, survey and event registration programs such as MailChimp, Qualtrics, and Eventbrite or similar 

  • Experience in Excel, PowerPoint, and either Canva or Adobe Creative Suite (including Photoshop and Illustrator) 

  • Excellent organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail 

  • Experience managing multiple projects and handling competing deadlines 

  • Willingness to perform a variety of duties and keep track of work for reporting progress to supervisors 

  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment 

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate. 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Demonstrated interest in energy-related research or policy. 

  • Experience in the following areas: 

  • Visual presentation and storytelling 

  • Photography and/or videography 

  • Creating and editing video content 

  • Event planning, graphic design, and copywriting public-facing content 

  • Updating websites in a CMS such as WordPress or Drupal 

  • Using a project management tool such as Asana, Monday, Jira, ClickUp, or Trello 

  • Working in energy-related fields and/or in communications, public affairs, government, media, or similar organizations 

  • Working with professional staff in an office environment 

  • Strategy or process development 

Salary Range 

$17+ per hour, depending on qualifications

Work Shift 

  • The number of hours and the schedule for this position will be set by mutual agreement between the worker and manager.
