About This Opportunity 

The Practice Manager assists the General Counsel to manage and coordinate the operations and administrative function of UQ’s Legal Services practice, and is an integral part of a busy, hardworking and collaborative legal team.

In this role, you will be responsible for driving process improvement, technology adoption, business intelligence, and knowledge management, to support Legal Services’ strategic goals. You will also co-deliver projects which align with the University’s broader strategy and promote operational excellence, innovation, and efficiency in the delivery of legal services.

The position reports to the General Counsel, supports the Directors and is responsible for managing and supervising a collaborative and professional team of administrative support staff.

About Legal Services

The University’s in-house legal team is responsible for the delivery of legal services to the Vice-Chancellor, executive management, and other key decision makers at UQ to support the achievement of UQ’s strategic objectives while protecting its interests. Legal Services is led by the General Counsel who reports to the Chief Operating Officer and is part of the Chief Operating Officer’s senior management team.

About You

The successful applicant must have extensive operations and management expertise and experience (preferably in a legal practice) or qualifications in Law, Business or a related field or an equivalent combination of relevant extensive training and experience. Additionally, you will demonstrate:

  • experience in leading, supervising, training, mentoring and performance managing a team of staff who provide a range of administrative support services in order to provide quality and timely client service.

  • project management and organisational skills to deliver projects and solutions to improve the operations of a legal practice.

  • high level written and oral communication, collaboration and networking skills, with ability to engage with, develop productive working relationships with and influence a wide variety of stakeholders.

  • proficiency in legal enterprise software, tools and applications, and expertise in matter management tools.

  • ability to work independently and as part of a team, exercising initiative and sound judgement to manage day-to-day operations, seeking guidance when required.

  • time management and organisational skills and a meticulous attention to detail, with a proven ability to prioritise tasks to meet competing deadlines with a high degree of accuracy in the context of minimal supervision.

  • ability to use change management practices to facilitate transitions related to technology, processes, and people.

Desirable

  • Understanding of the legislative framework that applies to UQ or experience in working for a statutory body or government entity.

  • Experience in evaluating, procuring and overseeing implementation of technology solutions for a legal practice.
