Who we are/Ko wai mātou

Since its establishment in 1905, the Department of Physiology has grown to become one of the largest Departments in the University, being home to approximately 100 staff.

We make major contributions to the undergraduate and postgraduate education of students in science, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, physiotherapy, medical lab sciences, nutrition, and physical education.

The Department is internationally known for its outstanding contribution to new knowledge in various physiological areas (e.g. neurophysiology, cell physiology and cardiovascular physiology) and has a strong track record for being successful with the acquisition of highly competitive overhead-funded research grants.

Academic and research staff in our laboratories are engaged in high-quality internationally recognised physiological research. We use state-of-the-art technologies to undertake integrative, cellular, and molecular investigations aimed at understanding animal and human physiology.

The role/Te mahi

Applicants are invited to apply for two permanent, full-time positions of Laboratory Technician to attend to the preparation, servicing and setting up of the Department of Physiology’s undergraduate teaching laboratories.

In this role, you will be responsible for:
•    The preparation of laboratory classes for students, as directed by the Technical Manager.
•    Providing laboratory and computer technical support to staff and students in the undergraduate teaching laboratories. 
•    Some administrative aspects of student and teaching databases.

Your skills and experience/Kā pūkeka me kā wheako

•    A BSc (Physiology), or a NZ Certificate in Science, or a National Diploma of Science or an equivalent.
•    Excellent laboratory and organisational skills.
•    The ability to work within a team or individually, and with staff and students of differing backgrounds.
•    Computer experience is essential.

Both roles are full-time (37.5 hours per week), permanent positions based in Ōtepoti, Dunedin.

The appointment range for these roles are $69,931 to $74,609 per annum. Top of the range is $80,285.

The intended start date for both these positions will be Monday 2 March 2026 and Monday 23 March 2026.
