The Department of Surgery and Critical Care at the University of Otago, Wellington is a multidisciplinary group dedicated to linking basic science with clinical research and providing high quality clinical teaching.
Our department conducts a broad spectrum of research ranging from basic and translational science to clinical studies. Our research interests cover a broad range of surgical disciplines, as well as anaesthesia, emergency medicine, and cardiovascular physiology and medicine.
The role | Te mahi
This Research Assistant position works to carry out practical laboratory work while contributing to the development, conduct and dissemination of research projects that relate to molecular biomarkers in surgical cancers and cardiovascular disease.
You will be involved in and gain experience with a wide range of intellectually stimulating areas including:
• The collection of tissue for biobanking
• Isolation, culture, and characterisation of primary human tissues
• Running laboratory assays including ELISAs, Western blots, and RT-qPCR
• Assisting with the management of the laboratory space
Your skills and experience | Kā pūkeka me kā wheako
• BBioMedSc, BMedLab Sci, BSc or equivalent.
• Experience in molecular biological and/or genetic techniques.
• Understanding of and commitment to confidentiality and ethics in dealing with clinical information for patients involved in research studies.
• Enthusiasm for learning new skills and an ability to work across a variety of tasks.

This is a full-time (37.5 hours) fixed term (12 month) position, based in Pōneke, Wellington.
The appointment range for this role is $27.26 to $32.87 per hour.
