Position Summary

The University of New Mexico Press seeks a Business Manager to join the premier publisher of academic, regional, literary, and trade books in the state of New Mexico, and one of the oldest and largest university presses in the West. The Business Manager serves as a strategic partner to the Press Director and manages day-to-day UNM Press accounting, budgeting, royalties processing, and financial reporting. This role oversees the Business accounting team. As a part of Press leadership, the Business Manager will serve as a member of the Press management team and will participate in strategic decision-making and long-range financial planning. The Business Manager is a principal liaison with university finance and accounting and a principal liaison with the Press’s distribution partner, Simon & Schuster. The Business Manager will provide business intelligence and data analysis to support the Press’s growth and financial well-being. UNM Press prefers management roles to be on-site on a hybrid basis; however, remote options will be considered for the right candidate.

Founded in 1929, UNM Press is one of the oldest and largest university presses in the West. The Press publishes original and groundbreaking scholarship in the fields of anthropology and archaeology, Native studies, Chicana/o studies, literary criticism, Latin American studies, and US Western History. We publish trade books and series related to New Mexico and the Southwest, including fiction, poetry, cookbooks, guidebooks, history and biography, especially works from underrepresented voices of the region. And we publish books and authors with Western roots and national and international resonance through our trade imprint High Road Books.

Principal duties and responsibilities include:

  • Directs financial reporting, analysis, and the budget cycle for UNM Press
  • Assists the Director and Assistant Director with strategic planning and daily management
  • Oversees and manages the UNM Press business department
  • Represents the Press’s financial interests with Simon & Schuster Distribution Services; reconciles all revenues and expenses
  • Develops financial policies and strategies to support key initiatives
  • Oversees routine and ad hoc decision support analysis
  • Prepares annual and specialized budgets, financial forecasts and reports, and position budgeting, recommending adjustments for efficiency
  • Ensures financial transactions and reporting align with accounting principles, publishing-industry standards, and UNM fiscal policies
  • Works with UNM Press managers to plan and control departmental expenses
  • Collaborates with the UNM Foundation to track gifts and endowments, ensuring proper fund allocation
  • Oversees royalty accounting, including the preparation and dissemination of royalty statements
  • Prepares Association of University Presses (AUP) quarterly and annual reports
  • Engages in some travel as needed

Conditions of Employment
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications Preferred qualifications include:
  • 4-plus years in a business, accounting, or finance role
  • 2-plus years of experience with sales and inventory data and reporting
  • 2- plus years in a management role
  • Demonstrated experience and/or interest in book publishing, finance, and accounting
  • Familiarity with publishing royalties accounting
  • Familiarity with university-based accounting principles and practices
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse population of students, staff, faculty, and community members
