About this role

The Research Scientist III will be housed in the Earth Systems Research Center (ESRC) at the Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans, and Space. The Research Scientist III will lead and co-lead innovative interdisciplinary research projects at the intersection of outdoor recreation management, community engagement, and weather/climate. The position will support the ESRC’s core mission to produce science and policy research relevant to New Hampshire’s outdoor industry.

The ideal candidate should hold a PhD in Natural Resources, Earth and Environmental Science, Recreation Management and Policy, or closely related field. Candidates should have a record of peer-reviewed publications on topics including outdoor recreation management in local communities in New Hampshire and New England. Skills in interviews and survey analysis, quantitative analysis, and strong writing and composition are also required. Additional skills may include experiential learning instruction and certifications.

Duties/Responsibilities 

Proposal Writing (20%)

  • Lead and collaborate on interdisciplinary research proposals to major funding sources (e.g., National Science Foundation, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, United States Department of Agriculture, and private foundations)

  • Contribute to proposal idea generation and serve on proposal review panels

Original Research (80%)

  • Plan and carry out innovative research at the intersection of outdoor recreation management, community engagement, and weather/climate

  • Produce high-impact peer-reviewed publications

  • Communicate research results broadly to public interest holders, including in outdoor recreation community, K-12 schools, mountain communities with substantial outdoor industry and/or economies

  • Support funded research projects in outdoor recreation, community engagement through NH Listens project, and other snow and climate monitoring.

Requirements

Minimum Acceptable Education & Experience:

  • Ph.D. in Natural Resources, Earth and Environmental Science, Recreation Management and Policy or related field.

Required Licenses & Certifications:

  • NH Driver’s License

Compensation Pay Range:

$69,560.00 - $124,580.00
