About this role

The Stroke Program at the University of Minnesota seeks 2 board-eligible / board-certified Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) to join a dynamic and growing group of ten specialist stroke APPs. These are two 1.0 FTE positions.

Our stroke team currently provides longitudinal stroke care at two comprehensive stroke centers, the University of Minnesota Medical Center and Fairview Southdale Hospital, with planned expansion to St. John's Hospital in Maplewood in 2026. Additionally, the team uses telemedicine to provide expert stroke care throughout the state. Our mission also includes leading stroke education efforts and advancing stroke treatment through innovative quality improvement and clinical research.  APPs are integrated members of the academic stroke team, attending and participating in educational conferences. 

Responsibilities include:

  • Practice in both the inpatient and ambulatory setting.  APPs have the opportunity for independent practice in conjunction with 24-7 fellowship-trained physician specialist collaborators.
  • Evaluate and treat stroke patients with a focus on emergent stroke interventions, diagnostic stroke evaluation, and secondary stroke prevention.
  • Use telestroke to perform clinical care at remote partnering hospitals.  
  • Day shifts with 13 weekends per year and rotating holiday coverage. Inpatient coverage averages four 10 hour shifts per week. 

We’re Looking For a PA or NP Who Is:

  • A graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant or formal Adult Nurse Practitioner training program.
  • Eligible or is certified through NCCPA, ANCC or AANP.
  • Licensed or eligible to acquire a license and prescriptive authority through the MN Board of Medical Practice (PAs) or MN APRN license or eligible to acquire a license and prescriptive authority through MN Board of Nursing (NP’s).
  • Able to meet threshold criteria/qualifications for credentialing and privileges.
  • Ability to work both independently and in teams, including those located at remote hospitals.
  • Proficiency with using electronic medical records and chart documentation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous stroke care experience or neurology training is preferred, however, otherwise excellent candidates who are enthusiastic about neurology and stroke are encouraged to apply. Please consider including a cover letter to further define your interest in stroke care.
  •  An interest in teaching and education opportunities
  •  An interest in local research including the opportunity to present one's findings at local and national conferences.
  • A desire to participate in and enroll patients in important clinical trials testing new stroke treatment

Required Certifications:

  • Basic Life Support

Competencies:

  • Recognition of a neurologic emergency
  • Expertise in differential diagnosis
  • Accurate NIHSS assessment in person and via telemedicine video call
  • Neuroimaging proficiency regarding neurologic emergencies such as stroke, intracranial hemorrhage, hydrocephalus
  • Collaborative stroke code management with members of stroke, endovascular and emergency department teams
  • Working collaboratively in a team environment

The full-time salary range is $137,366 - $168,454 commensurate with practice experience and may also include incentive compensation or additional specialty-specific compensation components. Salary prorated based on FTE.
