About this role

The University of Iowa Health Care department of Family Medicine is seeking an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner. Function as an ARNP and change agent incorporating the primary role of nurse practitioner and the supporting roles of consultant, educator, researcher, and administrator to support quality care and positive patient outcomes.

Duties to include:

  • Assure clinical competency and expertise in area of specialization.

  • Function independently and/or as a member of an interdisciplinary team to plan, deliver and evaluate health care for a defined patient population.

  • Collaborate with nursing staff/nursing administration to monitor and evaluate the quality of patient care.

  • Determine nursing care requirements and develop programs for a specific patient population, with regard to patient condition and age, and follow universal precautions.

  • Promote health maintenance that spans the continuum of health from outpatient to inpatient settings and back to the home care arena.

  • Perform medical diagnostic, therapeutic procedures, and prescribe, dispense, or deliver medications when a collaborative practice agreement is in place.

  • Provide anticipatory guidance and counseling to patients/families.

  • Document patient assessment and plan of care in the medical record and generate appropriate health reports for outgoing correspondence.

  • Initiate and coordinate referrals to other health care team members or agencies.

  • Serve in a consultative resource capacity by providing expert knowledge and behavioral skills that impact clinical practice and patient outcomes.

  • Participate in the development, utilization, and evaluation of resources to meet patient/family educational needs.

  • Provide education and serve as a resource for nursing staff in area of clinical expertise.

  • Provide education to external agencies, community, and other health professionals.

  • Generate research questions regarding health care for particular patient populations.

  • Incorporate research findings into practice.

  • Participate in development and implementation of divisional and departmental quality assessment/improvement/research programs and processes.

  • Responsible for administrative activities and special projects as assigned.

  • Contribute toward the achievement of divisional and departmental goals.

  • Participate and contribute to activities that enhance clinical expertise and nursing knowledge.

  • Participate in professional nursing activities in the department, hospital, community, and professional organizations.

The department intends to hire either a Family Medicine Physician Assistant (requisition 26001367) or a Family Medicine Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (requisition 26001368) based on the qualifications of the successful candidate.  Please apply to the specific position for which you wish to be considered.

Required Qualifications:

  • Education: A Master’s degree is required.  A Master’s degree in Nursing is preferred.  If Master’s degree is in a related field, a Baccalaureate degree in nursing is required.
  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required.
  • Current certification in specialty area and licensure as ARNP in state of Iowa is required.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in a primary care environment providing care to adults and children is highly desirable.

  • Minimum of 1-year clinical experience after completion of ARNP (Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner) training is highly desirable.

  • Demonstrated proficiency with EPIC is highly desirable.

  • 2+ years’ experience in a primary care setting and/or experience in prenatal care is preferred.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Previous experience in a primary care environment providing care to adults and children.
