Summary of Job Duties:

This position is used to fill multiple positions

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) performs patient care tasks and duties which do not require a license. The PCT is a trained member of the unit based team who supports the on-going delivery of care as identified by the multidisciplinary patient management team in H7 Medical Oncology Unit. 

H7 Medical Oncology Unit has 30 private rooms and provides state of the art therapies to a wide range of medical oncology patients and family medicine patients. Practicing in this environment allows the RN to develop skills in chemotherapy and biotherapy administration, management of a range of IV central access devices, management of a variety of symptoms associated with the disease process and/or treatment, and development of skills in emotional support and palliative care. This area also provides learning opportunities in all areas of medical-surgical nursing. A strong interdisciplinary team including physicians, nurses, pharmacists, nutritionists, and social workers support the patient in their various therapies.


Qualifications:

Required:

  • High School Diploma/GED.

  • Successful completion of patient care technician course within 3 months of hire. 

  • Must have excellent communication skills, ability to follow oral instructions, basic computer skills, strong work ethics and accountability.

  • Must be able to lift 100 lbs. to waist height.

 

Preferred: 

  • Certification as a nursing assistant or military corpsman

  • Patient care experience in acute care setting.

  • Prior PCT experience.

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) works under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse(s) and performs tasks and duties which do not require a license, professional judgment or intervention. The PCT must pass the required competencies. The PCT works within the Department of Nursing standards. The PCT adheres to UAMS clinical programs, policies, procedures and standards and guest care guidelines.

Responsibilities:

  • Obtains patient report and has on-going communication with R.N. regarding patient care/changes in condition; Informs nurse of patient requests or complaints.

  • Assists with admission, transfer, and discharge of patients.

  • Transports patients to other areas of the hospital as directed.

  • Carries out the Plan of Care for Patient using a Multidisciplinary Approach as Delegated by Team Leader.

  • Communicates effectively with other team members to facilitate patient care.

  • Accepts directions from R.N.s and team members.

  • Follows through on delegated patient care activities.

  • Provides appropriate grooming/oral hygiene and comfort measures and assists patients with activities (ambulation, up in chair, turn and reposition).

  • Documents all patient care activities/tasks, vital signs, ADL, wave tests, I&O's accurately and timely and per unit and department standards.

  • Assists patients and visitors with information and/or solutions to problems.

  • Serves as resources person to support department members in performance of duties.

  • Notifies appropriate staff members of problems requiring prompt intervention.

  • May perform other duties as assigned.

All new Patient Care Technicians are required to complete 5 weeks of training Monday - Friday 8:00AM - 5:00PM after being hired.

 

Employees in this role must be fitted for, capable of donning and performing routine tasks in personal protective equipment to include N95 masks, Powered Air Purifying Respirators (PAPR) or Controlled Air Purifying Respirators (CAPR).
