Summary of Job Duties:

This position will work under the supervision and direction of the HLA laboratory supervisor. MLS II in the HLA laboratory performs a variety of technical procedures including HLA typing by rSSO and next generation sequencing methods, Luminex based HLA Antibody identification, and donor/recipient flow cytometric cross-matching. They are expected to keep all instrumentation in good working order and identify and notify the supervisor or lead tech of instrument malfunctions. The MLS II fulfills all the responsibilities and tasks of a MLS I as well as performing quality assurance metric studies, and training/competency assessments.


Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory science

  • 2 years of experience in a clinical laboratory

  • CHT (ABHI) certification within 1 year of eligibility. If eligible at time of hire then within 1 year of hire date.

  • Must be able to identify and report abnormal test results as well as communicate and interact with reviewing Pathologists and submitting clinicians. Must be able to work independently, multi-task, and make subjective decisions. Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science

  • Current CHT (ABHI) certification

Job Requirements:

  • Trains new hires in the department and is responsible for training/competency assessments.
  • Maintains appropriate reagent stock in the department by performing inventory counts and submitting inventory orders to the lead tech or supervisor.
  • Assist with preparing preliminary reports pending HLA Medical Director Review as needed. Assist other HLA technologist as needed
  • Provide technical information e.g. specimen requirements and collection, test methods etc. to RN, Physicians and other clients
  • Perform advanced troubleshooting on equipment used to perform testing. Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed.

  • Follow the laboratory's established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance. Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems or immediately notify the lead tech, general supervisor, or director.

  • Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.

  • Maintain equipment used for personal protection and safety such as eyewashes, safety showers, biohazard containers, hoods, chemical cabinets and personal protective equipment.

  • Maintain temperature dependent equipment such as refrigerators, freezers, incubators, water baths, heat blocks

  • Perform other duties as needed.
