Summary of Job Duties:

The Medical Laboratory Scientist I (MLS I) performs routine and complex laboratory testing in various sections such as hematology, microbiology, chemistry, immunology, and blood banking to aid in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease.


Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Chemistry, or Biology
  • ASCP or another accrediting agency certified or eligible (Certification must be obtained within one year of employment).

Job Responsibilities:

  • Orders and processes specimens and verifies appropriate test orders for requisitions to be issued to outside laboratories. 
  • Works with referral labs to resolve any questions or problems with specimens or order discrepancies.
  • Obtains and verifies results from referral labs and enters results into patient medical records.
  • Works closely with internal clinics or hospital staff to resolve issues with active testing orders or patient blood draws.
  • Works with clients to clarify orders, obtains requisitions, and coordinates specimens with special collection or shipping instructions.
  • Manages release of specimens to reference labs and ensures adequate inventory of shipping supplies and order supplies.
  • Maintains temperature dependent equipment such as refrigerators.
  • Monitors facilities and equipment and arranges for necessary repairs or maintenance as needed.
  • Manages workflow during EPIC downtime and recovery periods.
  • Ensures adequate inventory and reports shortages and problems to supervisor or manager as they occur.
  • Performs general administrative tasks including stocking supplies, sanitizing work areas, and data entry.
  • Maintains continuing education requirements including annual education and/or training as required for position.
  • Maintains working knowledge and understanding of hospital policies as well as state, federal and other regulatory requirements.
