Summary of Job Duties:

This position will work under the supervision and direction of the Blood Bank laboratory supervisor. Medical Laboratory Scientists in the Blood Bank laboratory perform a variety of technical procedures including HLA typing by rSSO and next generation sequencing methods, Luminex based HLA Antibody identification, and donor/recipient flow cytometric cross-matching. They are expected to keep all instrumentation in good working order and identify and notify the supervisor or lead tech of instrument malfunctions. They should be able to aid in instrument repair. They should be able to identify abnormal or discrepant results. They will have limited participation in student teaching and assisting of other personnel rotating through the section. They will have limited administrative duties.


Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology or Medical Laboratory Sciences OR an approved ASCP discipline (30 semester hours in biology and chemistry, which may be obtained within, or in addition to, the Bachelor's). 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • ASCP and/or CHT (ABHI) certification

  • Previous clinical laboratory experience

Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct patient care by supplying the patient with appropriate blood components as determined by accurate testing to ensure the patient receives the appropriate blood components.

  • Responsible for performing ABO/Rh, IAT, DAT, antibody identification, cross-matching units of blood, and running the automated ABO/RH, IAT equipment.

  • wash red blood cells and plasma.

  • Perform platelet crossmatching and platelet antibody identification.

  • Perform daily reagent QC and equipment preventive maintenance.

  • Issue blood and blood components to the floors. UAMS is a level one trauma center, so in this position, the staff member is required to understand the importance of massive trauma and to issue blood and blood components as set forth in the Massive Transfusion Protocol.

  • Communicate effectively with the blood bank customers, including physicians, nurses, and other UAMS staff members.

  • Receive samples and to ensure all samples are appropriately labeled and collected properly for the blood bank.

  • Assist in the training of new staff and students. The staff member is required to maintain their competency and train on all revised and new policy/procedures on time.

  • Report any deviation from standard operating procedures to the supervisor on time.

  • Perform daily reagent QC and equipment Preventive maintenance with 100% accuracy.

  • Assist with the performance of Quarterly, Semi-annual, and Annual quality control.

  • Other duties as assigned.
