POSITION SUMMARY

The Assistant Hall Manager (AHM) assists the Department of Residence Life with the development of a successful academic and residential life experience for students. Major responsibilities include: supervision, training, and evaluation of 4-16 Resident Assistant (RA) staff; work with programming specific to support academics and student retention; and serve as a member of Central Staff.

RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Student Staff Administration and Supervision – The Assistant Hall Manager will serve as the primary supervisor of the RA staff.

  • Advise students, within the limits of training and capability, on personal, social, & academic concerns while maintaining strict confidentiality and making referrals when necessary

  • Meet weekly/biweekly with the building’s RA staff to provide direct supervision, establish personal contact, and maintain open communication

  • Participate, complete, and facilitate RA staff evaluations; distribute and collect surveys designed to review specific areas of the Residence Life program

  • Review duty logs and reports as a means to keep up to date and assist RAs in building skills related to aiding students on attitudes, academic achievements/difficulties, and health problems

  • Oversee all aspects of RA programming expectations and front desk services.

  • Assist the RA staff in handling minor discipline, community, and roommate concerns

  • Coordinate the RA duty schedule

  • Meet weekly with the Hall Manager

  • Work with the Hall Manager to develop ongoing training for the RA staff

  • Assist the Hall Manager in conducting weekly staff meetings

  • Hold three office hours above and beyond time spent in the office on administrative tasks

  • Provide mentoring and assist with training incoming, newly hired Assistant Hall Managers for the following academic year

2. Residence Hall Policies – The Assistant Hall Manager explain, enforce, and implement policies as directed by the Department of Residence Life and the University.

  • Make students aware of the rights and responsibilities they share within the community.

  • Confront and document students who violate community standard and/or University policy. Provide the necessary and appropriate follow-up with these students

  • Maintain staff consistency in order to ensure staff credibility

3. Departmental Administrative Duties – The Assistant Hall Manager will assist with Departmental Administrative Duties.

  • Attend and participate in all Residence Life trainings and in-service training workshops,

  • Participate in weekly Central Staff meetings

  • Meet monthly with the Associate Director and Director of Residence Life

  • Assist with and participate fully in the student staff selection process

4. Residence Life Events – The Assistant Hall Manager will assist with and be present for Residence Life events and programming.

  • Help organize and prepare the residence hall for move-in, -out, opening, and closing

  • Attendance is required at the following events: Residence Life Training; Weekend of Welcome, Hall Opening and/or other Special Weekend Events

TIME COMMITMENT & TRAINING

  • 10-15 hours per week

  • 40 hours a week of summer availability preferred

  • Must be available for Fall Training: TBD – approximately 2 weeks prior to the start of fall classes

  • Must be available for Winter Training: TBD – approximately weekend prior to the start spring classes

  • Attendance at UW-Superior and/or Residence Life events

COMPENSATION

  • Single room

  • Meal plan points

  • Monetary $2,800 semesterly stipend

REPORTS TO

  • Hall Manager of respective building (Direct Supervisor)

  • Can take direction from Residence Life Professional staff

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be a current at least half-time UW-Superior student in good academic standing (2.75 cumulative GPA)

  • One year of relevant Student Affairs work experience; experience in Residence Life preferred

  • Energy and enthusiasm for assisting students

  • Must have a sensitivity and concern for others as individuals

  • Ability to effectively mentor students in the areas of personal and academic related issues

  • Demonstrate effective team work, communication, and conflict resolution skills

  • Ability to exhibit professional conduct at all times
