UGL is currently looking for an experienced Principal Electrical Design Engineer (Primary Systems) to become a key member of the Power Utilities teams based in Sydney/Brisbane or Melbourne. You will be responsible for providing detailed designs, developing specifications and interface with management on design issues.
About the Role
The Primary Design Engineer will be responsible for but not limited to:
• Provide conceptual and detailed design of HV Substations up to 500kV for major utilities and renewables projects including BESS, solar and wind farms and also providing support on Transmission Line projects. Develop specifications and interface with management on design issues.
• Plan and conduct professional engineering works
• Attend site, supplier or customer premises to ascertain or confirm project requirements
• Substation Configuration and Busbar Config (Single, double, 1.5CB scheme, etc.)
• Plant layouts, sections, and details, Busbars and Connections (Fittings, Busbar Selection (Rigid, Strung), S/C Forces, Gantry forces, Sags/ Tension/ Deflection, Arrangement)
• Clearances and Layouts (Safety, Fire, Transportation and Maintenance) / Underground Services (Trenches/ Conduits/Cable routes capacity) / Earthing design (Fundamentals, Soil/ Grid Testing, Current Splits)
• HV cable design/Lightning protection study/EMF and Corona study/ Lighting design
• Preparation of HV equipment/Buildings specification and technical particulars.
• Insulation Coordination (SA Selection / Insulation Selection)
• Fair Knowledge on BESS, Solar and Wind farms and their requirements
• Fair Knowledge on system planning, fault calculation, Power quality and Harmonics
About You
• 4 year degree qualification to Bachelor status in electrical engineering.
• 7+ years’ experience at a senior level with substation design and/or primary design of HV plants
• Fundamental understanding of primary design.
• Expertise in substation design and/or utility grid connections
• Detailed knowledge of electrical distribution design and relevant Australian standards
• High-level communication and stakeholder management skillsDetails understanding of HV cable design, Earthing design and lightning protection.
• Solid knowledge on insulation coordination, EMF and lighting design
• Professional level knowledge of Cymcap, EMTP and CDEGS design software
• Sound knowledge of HV and Solar farm equipment specification.
• Basic understanding of secondary design aspects of HV plants, solar and wind farms.
• Solid understanding of the interface requirements of the civil/structural aspects of HV substations.
• Chartered Status including PREV, RPEQ, NER & CPEng is desirable.

UGL Regional Linx was established in 2021, after parent company, UGL Limited was selected to deliver operations and maintenance of rail infrastructure for the Country Regional Network (CRN). This network ensures the safe movement of people and goods throughout the regions of NSW, and links Sydney with many important regional centres.
UGL Regional Linx commenced operations on January 30 2022 and works on behalf of the client, Transport for NSW (TfNSW) and will be responsible for managing an important network of assets. As part of its operation, UGL Regional Linx’s scope of work includes:
• Network operations
• Rail infrastructure maintenance and implementation of a new train control system - UGL’s proprietary system, Sigview.
• Asset and property management, and
• Safety, access, performance, and environmental management.
UGL Regional Linx has made a strong commitment to local and indigenous employment, further strengthening the organisation’s commitment to regional NSW. As part of its operations, UGL Regional Linx established its head office and Network Control Centre in the heart of the Central West, Orange, NSW.
The CRN network includes:
• 2,386 route kilometres of operational passenger and freight rail lines, including 996 km of branch line track used predominantly for haulage of grain, with lower mass and speed limits than other parts of the network
• 3,139 route kilometres of non-operational lines
• 27,000 hectares of land and infrastructure
• 1,312 level crossings (300 active)
• 1,200 property assets (including 356 heritage sites)
• 600 rail under bridges and 384 road overbridges
The CRN is a crucial piece of infrastructure to regional NSW and UGL Regional Linx is committed to ensure that it delivers for all customers, from rail passengers to farmers and industry.
