Main Duties & Responsibilities

Summary/Objective
Operates all the various types of heat-treating equipment used by the Company, making settings and adjustments as required to obtain correct mechanical properties as specified on material documentation.

This Job Classification shall be Level 4 on all equipment categories on the skills matrix and level 3 or higher for all other categories.

Essential Functions
Under general direction with periodic supervision or review performs the following:
Checks incoming materials, identifies and determines proper furnace settings and adjustments according to heat treat specifications.

  1.  Monitors heat treating equipment to assure proper settings and adjustments are maintained.
  2. Works with appropriate personnel to determine proper heat treatment procedure for all materials.
  3. Records temperature and time cycle data and posts data as per established procedures.
  4. Moves product or heat-treating supplies within the department or to designated areas of the plant.
  5. Performs daily maintenance and preventative maintenance on heat treating equipment and other tools and equipment used. Effect minor repairs as necessary. Assists with major repairs.
  6. Perform 5s cleaning inspection and lubrication to equipment and department.
  7. Visually or with precision measuring instruments, necks product specifications as to tensile strength, shear tolerance, micro hardness etc.
  8. Perform or direct cleaning operations before, during and after heat treating.
  9. Responsible for production quality and quantity within heat treating area.
  10. Works as an active team member by participating in problem solving, team building, and all other team activities to improve the processes, productivity, quality, etc. of the heat-treating operations. Uses interpersonal skills as well as good written and verbal communications. Assists other department members as required.
  11. Performs system accuracy tests as required.
  12. Able to set up and perform temperature uniformity surveys.

    Equipment / Process Responsibilities - Responsible for start-up, shut down, and condition monitoring of all pieces of heat treat equipment. Sets-up multiple loads across and various types of heat-treating equipment. Effects repairs to equipment and keeps department clean.

    Material or Product responsibilities - Perform duties that require close attention to work and supporting documentation specifications and other requirements. Responsible for performing work accurately to meet quality and performance requirements. Visually and / or with precision measuring instruments checks work for proper results.

    Responsibility for Work of Others - Accuracy of communication is mandatory for successful production and qualification of workpieces. Must communicate to appropriate personnel any problems or concerns regarding quality of work received or time flow of work in progress as it affects production schedules. Must be able to train employees of equal or lower classification in heat treating operations as well as on methods and procedures used by the Company in the production workflow and tracking.

    System Responsibility – Maintain certification to NADCAP through audit preparation and performance of audits. Review industry standards when revised to ensure compliance and capability of the equipment to change.

    Safety Responsibilities - Good housekeeping, knowledge of heat-treating equipment safety, and adherence to Company safety rules are required.

    Initiative and Ingenuity - Requires initiative in solving problems associated with the set-up and operation of at least 2 pieces of heat-treating equipment concurrently and ingenuity in adapting tooling and shop aids to complete operations. Make suggestions for improving the efficiency of workflow or equipment operation. Takes on our reports for additional work as current tasks are completed. Performs other work-related tasks as deemed necessary by Company needs.

    WORK ENVIRONENT

Environmental Surroundings - Work is in a machine shop environment where noise, temperature fluctuations, the repetitive nature of the job, etc. are less desirable than in a typical office environment.

Unavoidable Hazards - Possible hazard related to cuts, bruises, muscle strain, and burns. Exposure to metalworking fluids, airborne particles and extreme high temperatures. Appropriate protective wear for eyes, ears and clothing are required.

EFFORT
Physical - Able to lift up to 100 pounds. Hand and finger manipulation to adjust equipment and settings. Able to reach, bend and stretch. Able to use tools required for heat treat set - up. Capable of maneuvering between and operate at least 2 pieces of heat treating equipment concurrently. Most job assignments require standing and / or sitting for periods exceeding 15 minutes at a time.

Mental - Work at times is highly repetitive and monotonous. However, set-up and adjustments to heat treating equipment may require improvisations or ingenuity to achieve desired results. Reasoning ability required to interpret documentation of a highly technical nature. Must be able to draw valid conclusions from a variety of abstract and concrete variables. Required to run at least 2 pieces of heat-treating equipment concurrently and able to organize workflow for best efficiency.

Visual - Close attention to detail with moderate eye concentration over long periods of time. Able to read various precision instruments and gauges etc. Must be able to visually check workpieces for quality.

Qualifications

EDUCATION / TRAINING

Demonstrated ability to read and write English of a level required in Company shop documents and computer software entry and processing requirements. Must be capable of applying mathematical operations using fractions, decimals, and temperature degrees as required by heat treating operations. Able to interpret and implement pyrometry requirements per AMS2750. Show general knowledge of Nadcap audit checklists and audit preparation. Understands how different process parameters impact changes in part characteristics. Able to determine cause and corrections for quality and our production issues. Generally equivalent to journeyman level trade school graduate with emphasis in heat treatment.

EXPERIENCE
It requires 5 years of training or equivalent skills, knowledge, and expertise in the set - up and operation of heat-treating equipment which are similar or comparable to those used by the company and which are necessary to fulfill job requirements. Must have demonstrated the capability to set up and operate the heat-treating equipment required to the level of journeyman. Must read precision measuring instruments, gauges and engineering diagrams similar or comparable to those used in heat treating operations by the company.

Compensation

 In compliance with all states and cities requiring transparency of pay, the expected pay range for this position is $40.70 to $46.68

Compensation can vary depending on several factors, including a candidate's qualifications, skills, experience, competencies, and geographic location.  Some roles may qualify for extra incentives like equity, commissions, or other variable performance-related bonuses.  Further details will be provided by our recruiting team during the interview process.
