In this role, you'll:

 

As part of the Coordinator-General Division at Transport for NSW, you’ll take ownership of maritime assets that aren’t just structures they’re gateways that keep communities connected and commerce flowing.

 

You’ll act as the asset owner’s representative, accountable for asset strategies, technical assurance, regulatory compliance, and lifecycle performance to  ensure wharves, navigation aids, and coastal infrastructure are safe, reliable, and future-ready, so services operate smoothly and meet the highest standards.

 

You will operate at a portfolio and system level, providing oversight, setting direction and assurance expectations for operators and maintainers, while seeking to create long term value in a highly regulated, outsourced delivery environment.

 

Every decision you make will balance precision and purpose, seeing the bigger picture while making sure every detail counts to keep NSW’s waterways moving.

 

Your day-to-day will involve: 

 

  • Develop and own maritime asset strategies that optimise safety, reliability, service capacity, and whole-of-life cost outcomes.

 

  • Lead the implementation of technical assurance frameworks, ensuring compliance with maritime legislation, accreditation requirements, engineering standards, and Chief Engineer directives.

 

  • Provide asset owner oversight of work programs delivered through Asset & Services Plans (ASPs), assuring scope, quality, risk controls, and outcomes.

 

  • Lead resolution of complex technical, regulatory, and assurance issues, ensuring decisions are evidence-based, auditable, and aligned with safety and service objectives.

 

  • Set assurance and performance expectations for maintenance activities, including review of technical specifications, standards, and delivered outcomes. 

 

  • Manage asset owner relationships with operators and maintainers, holding them accountable through performance, assurance, and contract mechanisms.

 

  • Drive continuous improvement in asset condition, performance, assurance maturity, and governance practices.

 

  • Use asset performance data and risk insights to inform investment prioritisation, lifecycle planning, and future asset strategies.

 

  • Spend time on-site—inspecting wharves, navigation aids, and coastal structures to understand real-world conditions.

 

This is a hands-on role where your decisions will directly influence the safety and performance of NSW’s maritime network.

About you

 


You’re a strategic asset management professional who understands how to govern complex, regulated asset environments through clear frameworks, assurance, and evidence-based decision-making. 

 

You’re confident engaging with engineers, operators, and suppliers, and you know how to keep complex systems running smoothly.


 
You bring:

 

  • Engineering qualifications

 

  • Demonstrated experience in asset management, asset ownership roles, or technical assurance.

 

  • Strong knowledge of technical assurance frameworks, regulatory compliance, engineering governance, and standards.

 

  • Experience working with outsourced operators and maintainers, with the ability to provide independent oversight and challenge where required.

 

  • The ability to translate technical detail into clear asset strategies and executive-level advice.

 

  • Strong stakeholder engagement, planning, problem-solving, and contract management skills, with experience working across regulators, operators, engineers, and senior leaders to achieve consensus.

 

  • A proactive mindset with the ability to work autonomously and suggest innovative solutions.

 

  • A lifecycle and risk-based mindset focused on long-term asset performance, safety, and value 

 

 

 

Mode-specific experience is highly valued however not essential such as:

 

  • Understanding of wharf structures, navigation aids, and coastal infrastructure requirements.
