POSITION SUMMARY


The Camp & Activity Director is responsible for the daily management, supervision, and delivery of a designated camp activity area. This role plans, organizes, and leads age-appropriate programming for campers in grades 1–7 within assigned focus areas, including but not limited to sports, arts and crafts, nature, STEM, media, and administration. The Camp & Activity Director works under the general supervision of the Recreation Supervisor and supports the overall mission and values of Camp St. Clair.

 

The Upper St. Clair Community & Recreation Center provides members and guests with a comprehensive range of recreation services, including fitness programs, aquatics, summer camps, youth programming, and older adult services.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Plan, organize, and implement engaging, age-appropriate activities that support campers’ physical, social, emotional, and creative development.
  • Independently prepare daily activity plans while demonstrating flexibility, teamwork, and adaptability to changing needs.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized activity area, including proper use, care, and storage of equipment and supplies.
  • Ensure the safety and physical and emotional well-being of all campers within the assigned activity area.
  • Create and foster a fun, inclusive, and welcoming environment where campers feel secure, supported, and encouraged to grow
  • Model appropriate behavior and enforce camp rules, safety guidelines, and expectations consistently.
  • Assist Camp Counselors and Camp Directors with camper behavior management and conflict resolution as needed.
  • Communicate professionally and effectively with Camp Counselors, Camp Directors, the Recreation Supervisor, and parents when appropriate.
  • Actively participate in camp-wide activities, games, and special events alongside campers when appropriate.
  • Follow all written and verbal instructions and adhere to established camp policies and procedures.
  • Perform related duties as assigned to support camp operations.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

 

  • Demonstrated interest in working with preschool and/or school-age children in an indoor and outdoor camp environment.
  • Ability to lead, motivate, and positively engage groups of children.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with children, peers, supervisors, and the public.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships in a team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal daily supervision.
  • Ability to remain focused and complete tasks in a fast-paced environment with interruptions.
  • Ability to model professionalism, positive behavior, cleanliness, and appropriate appearance.
  • Willingness to wear appropriate swimming attire and enter the water to assist with camper supervision during pool activities, as directed.

 

Education, Experience, and Certifications

 

  • Prior experience working with preschool or school-age children required.
  • Minimum age of 18 by June 19, 2023.
  • At least one (1) year of relevant leadership or supervisory experience is preferred.
  • Current CPR certification required, or ability to obtain certification through the Community & Recreation Center by June 19, 2023.
  • Must successfully obtain and maintain required FBI, Child Abuse, and Criminal History Clearances prior to start date.

  • Vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to focus.
