Job Description

Join one of the nation’s most comprehensive academic medical centers, UChicago Medicine, as a Food Service Relief Worker PRN at our Hyde Park medical campus. This position is a 100% onsite opportunity. You will need to be based in the greater Chicagoland area. 

 

In this role, the Food Service Relief Worker PRN is responsible for working in all areas of the department, including patient food services, retail services, sanitation, transportation and delivery of food items, and food preparation. As a Relief Worker, you will be floating between the Center for Care and Discovery and Billings buildings. Job Duties are subject to fluctuate as scheduling needs arise.

Essential Job Functions:  

  • Dispenses and handles food according to department standards for patients, employees or visitors for meals or activities. 
    • This includes proper proportioning and temperature and notifying cook/supervisor of problems with quantity and temperature. 
  • Maintains safety and sanitation standards of the department to ensure food quality, including thorough cleaning before and after each assignment, trash collection and disposal, and operating departmental equipment. 
  • Transports and stores food and supplies properly to maintain quality according to department guidelines and at Supervisors instructions.   
    • This includes dating and labeling food accurately for storage, checking-in and rotating stock, monitoring storage units for temperature and malfunctions, and notifying Supervisor of any issues or problems. 
  • Demonstrates knowledge of safety procedures and practices in work area as indicated by lack of injury or incident. 
  • Follows established food handling practices according to department standards to maintain sanitation and infection control by wearing gloves, hair coverings and clean uniforms. 
  • Secures potentially dangerous equipment/supplies such as coffee urns, toasters, chemicals, or sharp objects to safeguard patients, visitors, and employees.  Notifies Supervisor immediately of any hazards or injuries. 
  • Assists in the orientation of new staff members in the department by demonstrating basic duties of the job. 
  • May assist with clerical services such as answering phones and maintaining accurate production, usage, and temperature records. 
  • Attends and actively participates in department in-services and unit/department meetings. 
  • Participates in identification and resolution of quality problems. 
  • Assumes responsibility for knowing and practicing policies and procedures for infection control, fire safety, disaster and general sanitation and safety principles. 
  • Demonstrates flexibility with additional duties and assignments to achieve the department's and hospital's goals. 
  • Complies with dress code. 
  • Performs other duties assigned. 

 

Required Qualifications: 

  • High School Graduate or GED equivalent from an accredited body.
  • Must be able to read, write, use simple math, and follow oral and written instructions. 
  • Ability to work harmoniously with a variety of people. 
  • Must show courtesy and tact, confidentiality and reasonable speed in performance of duties. 
  • Successfully pass the OSHA Respiratory Fit Test.  
  • On-the-job training provided.
