UChicago Medicine is seeking an experienced Central Sterile Processing Educator to join our world-class academic healthcare system at our Hyde Park campus. This 100% onsite opportunity is ideal for a passionate Sterile Processing professional and educator who thrives on developing people, elevating practice, and shaping the future of sterile processing through evidence-based education and staff development.

 

As the CSP Educator, you will serve as an educator, mentor, consultant, and change agent, partnering closely with Sterile Processing leadership to design, implement, and evaluate comprehensive education programs, competency-based training, and specialty orientations. You’ll leverage adult learning principles, regulatory standards, and healthcare trends to advance staff expertise, support strategic goals, and drive measurable improvements in quality, compliance, and operational outcomes—while fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional growth.

 

Essential Job Functions

 

  • Collects data regarding employee learning needs, at least annually, through the methods of observation, interviewing, focus groups and instrumentation.
  • Utilizes standardized and develops customized assessment tools and testing methodologies to measure staff knowledge and skill in core nursing practices and  within specialty areas.
  • Interprets accrediting and regulatory agencies’ guidelines as a basis for identifying education and training needs.
  • Interprets the medical center’s strategic imperatives, policies, guidelines, and other internal demands in order to design education that supports these strategic goals and key objectives.
  • Leads the development of tactics to achieve the organization’s strategic vision for education.
  • Offers recommendations for the deployment of educational resources to enable the achievement of organizational goals.
  • Interprets health care trends and incorporates current research into the design of learning needs assessments and the identification of learning needs.
  • Plans and designs a variety of educational activities based on the needs assessment.
  • Collaborates with key staff to develop a comprehensive annual educational calendar.
  • Designs core competencies that cross the continuum of expertise and practice, using essential criteria such as: facilitation of learning, collaboration, systems thinking, and response to diversity.
  • Designs specialty based orientations for sterile processing and clinic staffing.
  • Designs inservices and continuing education programs for staff.
  • Participates in the design of centralized and unit-based preceptor education and development initiatives.
  • Prepares educational objectives, lesson plans, handouts, self-learning modules, instructional manuals, and tests for programs.
  • Designs programs that use a variety of learning methods and technology.
  • Implements education activities
  • Fosters a cultural environment that promotes learning.
  • Skillfully employs the full spectrum of adult learning techniques.
  • Conducts a variety of learning events, based on needs assessment findings, using a variety of teaching-learning strategies
  • Creates a learning environment that encourages staff to maximize level of professional practice.
  • Effectively coordinates necessary support services for all education offerings.
  • Maintains an accurate system of recording activities and programs.
  • Serves as faculty in organization wide education events, as appropriate.
  • Evaluates education and training activities
  • Evaluates all learning activities using objective performance criteria and recommends corresponding changes in education plans.
  • Utilizes appropriate tools and testing methodology for assessing changes in learners’ knowledge, skills, and clinical practice as well as for determining education project/program effectiveness.
  • Revises programs/projects based on evaluative data.
  • Provides internal and external consultation
  • Provides consultation to employees on individual education and development situations, when requested by the employee or employee’s manager.
  • Rounds on units/employees and audits processes to assure compliance.
  • Participates and collaborates with nursing leadership in quality, research and scholarly activities and develops grant proposals as appropriate.
  • Develops knowledge and skill based measures to collect performance data and integrates measurement activities and findings into quality projects.
  • Recommends and leads the implementation of educationally focused improvement efforts aimed at improving key clinical/operational processes and outcomes.
  • Recommends various quality projects based on information revealed in planning, conducting, and evaluating staff education.
  • Publishes and/or presents information in area of expertise.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required; Associates Degree preferred
  • Certification from IAHCSMM (CRCST) or CBSPD (CSPDT) required within 18 months of hire
  • Minimum requirement of five years in Sterile Processing,
  • Certified a minimum of three years
  • Previous experience in a role as an educator preferred
  • Knowledge and previous application of adult learning principles
  • Demonstrates complex decision-making skills and problem solving ability

Compensation & Benefits Overview

 

UChicago Medicine is committed to transparency in compensation and benefits.  The pay range provided reflects the anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected to be offered for the position.

 

The pay range is based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data, reviewed on an annual basis. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations, such as internal equity. Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
