The Salvation Army is seeking a compassionate, spiritually grounded Chaplain to join our multifaith chaplaincy team serving people in custody across New South Wales. This is a unique opportunity to bring hope, dignity, and holistic care to individuals navigating some of life’s most challenging circumstances.
About the Role
As a Prison Chaplain, you will provide personcentred spiritual, pastoral, and religious support within Silverwater correctional centre. Working collaboratively with a diverse chaplaincy team and correctional staff, you will help meet the spiritual needs of people in custody and staff, offering guidance, connection, and care grounded in Wesleyan theology.
Your work will include facilitating worship services, Bible studies, ceremonies, and ensuring access to appropriate faith support. You will also play a key role in responding to critical incidents with traumainformed pastoral care, contributing to a safe and supportive environment.
This is a full-time permanent position based in Silverwater. Salary is in accordance with Hay Level 12.
Key Responsibilities
Deliver personcentred spiritual and pastoral care grounded in Wesleyan theology.
Create pathways for ongoing spiritual growth by collaborating with local corps, mission expressions, and other faith communities.
Provide timely, compassionate pastoral care during and after critical incidents, applying traumainformed principles.
Plan and lead services, ceremonies, and religious activities in line with Salvation Army traditions and correctional requirements.
Navigate organisational and correctional processes to ensure integrated, compliant pastoral care.
Contribute to staff and management understanding of TSA theology, values, and the importance of sacred spaces.
Work with Area Leadership Teams and correctional stakeholders to embed chaplaincy within broader mission strategies.
Participate in relevant meetings to ensure spiritual care is integrated into service planning and client support.
Complete all administrative, WHS, risk management, and OIMS reporting requirements to maintain service integrity.
Qualifications & Experience
Demonstrated commitment to the mission and values of The Salvation Army.
Previous chaplaincy experience or experience in a similar pastoral or spiritual care role.
Diploma of Chaplaincy (required).
Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) training.
Relevant theological qualifications.
Positive Lifestyle Program (PLP) Facilitator training (or willingness to obtain).
Ability to meet all Corrective Services NSW onboarding requirements
Working With Children/Vulnerable Persons Check
Driver’s licence (if required for vehicle access)
