From times of personal crisis to moments of national grief, we are always here — providing support, safety, community, and opportunity.

About the Role

The Night Support Youth Worker plays an important role in creating a safe, calm and supportive overnight environment for young people aged 15–25 who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness. You’ll be part of a small, dedicated team providing short-term accommodation and helping young people feel secure, respected and connected.

This role works on an alternate-week roster, averaging 38 hours per fortnight, with night shifts from 7pm to 7am, Thursday through Wednesday. Each shift includes 6 active hours (7pm–midnight and 6am–7am) and a sleepover component from midnight to 6am, with handover at 7am.

Pay is in accordance with the SCHADS Level 3 Award.

How You Will Make an Impact

  • Build positive, trusting relationships with young people and support them to feel safe and settled overnight.

  • Provide guidance and encouragement that helps young people work toward their goals.

  • Maintain clear, accurate notes and contribute to a consistent, supportive service environment.

  • Assist young people to access services, supports and community connections.

  • Keep the space safe, clean and welcoming, including completing required cleaning tasks.

  • Respond calmly and professionally to situations that arise overnight, using de-escalation and safety strategies.

  • Work independently as the overnight worker, with support from your Team Leader when needed.

What You Will Bring

  • Certificate III or IV in Youth Services (or related field), or equivalent experience supporting young people.

  • Experience working with at-risk youth or in a residential setting is desirable.

  • Understanding of trauma, adolescent development and the challenges young people may face.

  • Confidence in responding to behaviours that challenge, using calm and respectful approaches.

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build healthy, supportive relationships.

  • A commitment to The Salvation Army’s mission, values and inclusive practice.

  • Reliability, resilience and a genuine passion for supporting young people overnight.

What We Offer

  • NFP salary packaging benefits (up to $15,900 tax free) and Entertainment Benefit ($2,650 tax free).

  • Employee Assistance Program – confidential counselling service.

  • Financial, retail, and lifestyle discounts.

  • Discounted health and fitness programs through Fitness Passport.

  • Up to 8 weeks of leave per year through our purchase leave scheme.

  • Generous parental leave (12 weeks).

  • Up to 5 days paid leave per year to support a TSA program or activity.

  • A supportive, inclusive culture with passionate and dedicated team members.
