Overview

GENERAL PURPOSE OF JOB: The Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and sanitary environment to support the daily operations, programs, and mission of The Salvation Army. This role ensures that interior and exterior facilities are properly cleaned, maintained, and prepared for staff, volunteers, and community members.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES  

 

Cleaning and Sanitizing:

  • Sweep, mop, vacuum, and wax floors as needed.
  • Empty and clean waste receptacles, recycling bins, and ashtrays.
  • Clean and sanitize restrooms, including toilets, sinks, and fixtures.
  • Wipe down and disinfect high-touch surfaces, such as doorknobs, light switches, and handrails.
  • Clean windows, glass partitions, and mirrors.
  • Dust and wipe down furniture, shelves, and fixtures.
  • Maintain cleanliness in break rooms and kitchens, including appliance cleaning.

Maintenance:

  • Perform basic maintenance tasks, such as changing light bulbs and fixing minor plumbing issues.
  • Report any maintenance or repair needs to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Monitor and maintain cleaning equipment and supplies, ensuring they are in good working order.

 

Trash Removal:

  • Collect and dispose of trash and recyclables throughout the facility.
  • Ensure proper disposal of hazardous materials in accordance with safety regulations.

 

Restocking:

  • Replenish restroom and break room supplies, including soap, paper towels, and toilet paper.
  • Maintain inventory of cleaning and janitorial supplies, informing supervisors when supplies are running low.

 

Event Support:

  • Help set up and clean up for events, meetings, or conferences as required.
  • Help arrange chairs, tables, and other furniture for various functions.

 

Driving & Food Pick Up

  • Help pick up food donations for Food Pantry.
  • Driving duties are performed on an as-needed basis and require a valid driver’s license and compliance with The Salvation Army’s driving and background check policies.

 

Compliance:

  • Follow all safety and sanitation policies and procedures.
  • Comply with all regulations and guidelines related to custodial work, including chemical handling.

Qualifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Previous custodial or janitorial experience is a plus.
  • Knowledge of cleaning and sanitation techniques.
  • Ability to operate cleaning equipment such as vacuum cleaners, floor buffers, and power washers.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining a clean and safe environment.
  • Physical stamina and the ability to lift and carry heavy objects.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to follow instructions.
  • Dependability and a strong work ethic.
