Job Description:
Position Purpose summary:
The Assistant Manager provides a safe and secure environment for residents and visitors, while supervising staff at the work site.
Accountabilities:
The incumbent may perform all, some, or similar duties to the listed below:
CHARACTERISTIC JOB DUTIES:
The incumbent is responsible for the following range of job duties, typical of the job class:
- Assist the Residential Services Manager with the day-to-day management of Stevenson House Emergency Shelter staffing maintaining statistics and BC Housing database.
- In conjunction with the Residential Services Manager, participate in the candidate interview process for Stevenson House employees
- In consultation with the Residential Services Manager, fulfill management responsibilities in the hiring, encouraging, supervising, of staff reporting to you.
- Provide direction, support and leadership to employees through individual coaching and daily observation.
- Oversee the scheduling of staff and the reconciling of hours, and be responsible for on-call schedule (sick time, vacation, etc).
- Oversee that policies, standards and procedures are being consistently followed.
- Review guest files, overview the process of investigating and approving or denying guest extension requests.
- Oversee the care and safety of guests.
- Provide back up support to and when required assume functions of staff.
- Liaises with Police, funders, court personnel, community agencies, families, and other staff members
- Provides orientation for newly hired staff, volunteers, students
- Performs other duties as assigned
NOTE: Not all incumbents perform all of the duties described above but perform a similar range of duties.

FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:
- Financial: The incumbent is involved in minor financial matters. They may be authorized to collect rent and distribute damage deposits, and may be authorized to spend, disburse, or collect small amounts of cash.
Working Conditions:
The incumbent’s work environment is typically in a shelter and/or in treatment facilities.
The incumbent will work under the following disagreeable conditions:
- Dealing with angry people
- Abusive people
- Verbal abuse
- Isolation
- Work schedule affecting lifestyle
- Exposure to drugs and alcohol

Education, Experience, & Qualifications:
- Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
- Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
- Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening.
Education, Qualifications and Certifications:
- Addictions Counselling Courses
- Social services Diploma or related Diploma or Degree
- BC class 5 drivers License
Experience and Knowledge:
- Minimum two-year Experience in frontline social service work
Skills and Capabilities:
- The performance of the job requires the ability to supervise, coach and lead a team, adaptability to change and frequent interruptions.
- The performance of the job requires high amounts of keyboarding/Manual record keeping, and occasionally lifting/packing clients/residents property/personal effects and engaging in recreational activities.
- The performance of the job requires attentive listening and observation of body language, continuously monitoring the environment, multitasking and reading. Ability to work in a fast paced environment, to meet deadlines and cope with stressful situations.
Compensation:
The target hiring range for this position is $54,814.39 to $68,517.99 with a maximum of $82,221.59.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
