COMMUNITY COUNSELOR

Founded in 1970 by a behavioral health hospital and incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 1983, TLC is an entrepreneurial social enterprise committed to transforming lives and communities—one moment, one choice, one connection at a time. Headquartered in Pennsylvania, TLC operates across multiple states, providing K-12 alternative education, comprehensive mental and behavioral health services, coaching, counseling, and trauma-informed training. Additionally, TLC collaborates with school districts, universities, hospitals, police departments, and nonprofit organizations, offering consultation services to secure federal and state grant funding.
Summary:
The Counselor will provide services for individual and group counseling services with an emphasis on trauma informed care, intervention on drug and alcohol issues. Counselors must be able and willing to accept a variety of assignments and integrate their work with other TLC programs and community services.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
• Provide individual, family, and group counseling services in the areas identified in the Job Summary.
• Meet the specific requirements for TLC counseling positions and follow policies and procedures for those positions.
• Advocate for individuals and family members with health care professionals, legal personnel, service agencies, county departments, and others who are in a position to assist the persons receiving our services
• Monitor the progress of each client through the maintenance of appropriate case records and statistics on service provided
• Utilize Seeking Safety curriculum
• Provide outreach and facilitate inter-organizational cooperation with community agencies, county services, healthcare professionals, and community groups
• Attend education/training on topics related to counseling duties
• Oversee and be responsible for the gathering and reporting of data as required by contracts, grants, or certifying bodies
Skills:
Knowledge of multiple therapeutic modalities such as: CBT, motivational interviewing, trauma expertise, substance abuse intervention expertise, excellent collaboration skills.
Work Environment:
This job operates in a men’s shelter.
Physical Demands:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met
by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While
performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate
effectively. The employee frequently is required to sit, stand, walk, operate a
computer, hand-held learning devices and other office equipment, use hands to
finger, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms and must occasionally lift and/or
move up to 20 pounds.
Hours of Work:
This is position requires evening work as well as the sudden need for crisis intervention.
Travel:
Travel is primarily local. Use of a reliable car is necessary for travel to service sites.
Education and Experience:
• Master’s in Human Services, Counseling or Social Work field preferred.
• LSW (Licensed Social Worker) is preferred
• A minimum of two years related experience including knowledge of work with trauma and counseling with persons at high risk for drug and alcohol abuse.
