Reporting to the Supervisor of Sportsfields and Parks Maintenance through the Working Foreperson, the Seasonal Labourer will assist with the ongoing maintenance of Town facilities, parks, and open spaces.Job Duties Include
The following responsibilities and duties of this position includes but is not limited to:
Safe and responsible operation of all Town vehicles and equipment.
General grounds maintenance i.e. parks, facilities, boulevards, parks amenities
Lift and carry full garbage bags, fertilizer, soil, brush and tree branches etc.
Participate in the set up and take down of the required equipment (i.e. picnic tables, tables, chairs, garbage cans etc.) for special events.
Operate mowing equipment, string trimmers, leaf blowers, one-ton trucks, trailers, garbage truck, pick up litter.
Plant flowers, shrubs, trees and pull weeds.
Maintain vehicles and equipment in a clean, tidy condition, making regular inspections, reporting defects, etc. in a prescribed manner.
Provide daily guidance to a crew of summer students.
Day to day interaction with the public.
Qualifications/Skills
Minimum Grade 12 high school diploma or equivalent.
Nine (9) months relevant experience with machines and equipment used which includes: trucks, tractors, loaders, mowing equipment, small hand equipment.
Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
Ability to work with limited supervision and as part of a team.
Must be physically able to perform the duties of the job including heavy lifting and working in inclement weather for extended periods of time.
Good time management skills and flexible to work in a variety of locations, employees may be relocated to another location at any time throughout the work-term based on operational needs.
Ability to understand the Highway Traffic Act and knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
Class G driver's license in good standing and clear driver’s abstract is required.
Ability to provide a current criminal record check that is satisfactory to the Town of Ajax, upon being hired.
What is Offered to Staff:
Compensation: We offer competitive pay that reflects the responsibilities of the position.
Hours of Work: This is a unionized position that works a 40-hour work week in varying weather conditions. Seasonal Labourers are assigned to a crew, and crews may be required to work a rotating shift, including days, evenings and weekend shifts.
Duration of Employment: This seasonal role works up to 150 days per year, typically from April through the end of November. Please note that the exact timeline is based on the operational needs of the department and the candidate’s start date.
Probationary Period: Seasonal Labourers are required to complete a six (6) month probationary period and if the probation is successful, then the Seasonal Labourer will be invited to return in subsequent seasons.
