Job Summary
Reporting to the Facility Manager ACC, the Arena Operator is responsible for ice installation, ice removal, on-going ice maintenance, daily cleaning throughout the facility, building maintenance including painting and general repairs, facility set ups, supervising part time staff, facility supervision, ensuring building security, providing exceptional customer service to our user groups, and completing all Town and legislatively required logs and reports.
Arena Operators are responsible for supervising and directing the work of part time rink attendant staff assigned to work in their respective arena, including training, inspection of work, providing feedback on their work, and reporting any issues or concerns to the appropriate Facility Supervisor or Facility Manager. Arena Operators are also responsible for the monitoring and supervision of the public, both on ice, within the seating/ standing areas, and lobbies. This includes addressing problematic behaviour and intervening where necessary, reporting any issues to the appropriate Facility Supervisor/ Facility Manager and/or DRPS where required.
Job Duties Include
The following responsibilities and duties of this position include but are not limited to:
- Maintains the safe and efficient operation of the facility and the arenas.
- Executes ice removal and installation including painting the ice, including line markings, goal creases, and Town of Ajax/community ice user group logos.
- Inspects ice condition every shift to ensure it is safe for use and maintains ice pads throughout the day, resurfacing them as scheduled and keeping accurate records.
- Performs weekly ice maintenance which includes measuring ice depths, changing Ice Resurfacer blade, edging, chopping, shaving, inspecting and recording.
- Ensures Ice Resurfacer remains in safe operating condition by inspecting all fluid levels, and mechanical components. Inspects and greases bushings for moving parts like augers and conditioner. Records results and any defects every shift.
- Ensures safe operation in the Refrigeration Plants by monitoring pressures, temperatures, levels of refrigerants, lubricants, and cooling jackets, and performing routine maintenance.
- Performs general maintenance including drywall repairs, changing light bulbs and identifying where electrical repairs are required, repairing and restringing of hockey nets, painting of walls, doors, frames, and equipment, and preventive maintenance and repairs on arena glass and dasher board systems as needed.
- Monitors, cleans and disinfects facility including; dressing rooms, washrooms, hallways, stands, benches, arena and lobby area.
- Carries out Winter Control responsibilities such as inspecting and maintaining condition of walkways, entrances, emergency exits, performing snow/ice removal duties when required.
- Supervises part-time rink attendants and arena operator assistants, including training, work quality inspection, and ongoing supervision.
- Provides excellent customer service to all patrons by answering questions and resolving issues in a timely and professional manner.
- Provides set-up and take down services for any events held in the facility.
- Completes required incident reports and submits to the supervisor, provides first aid to injured customers as needed.
- Ensures the security of the building by locking interior and exterior doors as required.
- Acts in accordance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act, Town Policy and Procedures and other applicable legislation(s).
Qualifications/Skills
- Completion of Grade 12 diploma.
- Minimum 2 years of related experience supervising arena operations and operating ice maintenance equipment.
- TSSA Refrigeration Operator Class ‘B’ Refrigeration Certificate or 4th Class Operating Engineer Certificate is required.
- Working at Heights Certification.
- Experience/ training operating aerial and scissor lifts.
- WHMIS training.
- Current Standard First Aid with CPR C and AED certification
- Valid Class ‘G’ Ontario driver's license with a clear driver's abstract.
- Strong customer service, communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills.
- Good time management skills.
- Able to work under minimal supervision and be a strong team player.
- Able to perform the essential duties of the job including heavy lifting.
- Able to provide a Criminal Reference check with Vulnerable Sector screening dated within the last six months that is satisfactory to the Town.
- Able to work a variety of shifts including morning, afternoon, evening and weekend shifts.
Nice to Have
- Mental Health First Aid certification (asset).

- Compensation: We offer competitive pay that reflects the responsibilities of the position.
- Hours of Work: This is a unionized position that works 40 hours per week. The hours of work are Sunday to Saturday, various morning, afternoon, evening and weekend shifts between the hours of 6:00 a.m. - 12:00 a.m. and are in accordance with the CUPE Collective Agreement.
