About us

Can you turn spatial data into insights that shape London’s future? Do you want your work to directly inform decisions on major transport policies, funding allocations and strategic schemes development?

The Strategic Analysis team sits at the heart of TfL’s Customer & Strategy function, providing robust analysis, innovative solutions and the evidence base for our strategies, policies and investment plans. We manage TfL’s strategic transport models, deliver the London Travel Demand Survey, publish the annual Travel in London report, and lead analysis for Opportunity Areas, large-scale developments and key infrastructure projects.

Our 40-strong team includes GIS specialists, modellers, data scientists and transport planners. We value diversity of thought, inclusive collaboration, and an environment where every voice matters.

Within this, the Spatial Analysis & GIS team uses advanced geospatial tools, data science techniques, and innovative visualisation methods to assess the impacts of transport interventions — from road user charging and active travel schemes to air quality, public transport connectivity, and borough funding programmes. We work with colleagues across TfL, London boroughs, academia and the private sector to ensure data-driven decisions that benefit millions.

Overview of role

We are looking for an Analyst to deliver high-quality spatial analysis and mapping that will inform and influence TfL’s most important strategic projects. You’ll work with platforms such as ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online and QGIS, alongside data science tools and TfL’s bespoke analytical applications, producing clear, engaging outputs for a range of audiences.

You’ll translate complex data into clear insights, tailoring your work to stakeholders across TfL, boroughs, consultancy partners and academia. You’ll also contribute to continuous improvement by sharing skills, improving tools and exploring new methods and technologies.

Key accountabilities

  • Deliver timely, relevant and accurate spatial analysis, including high-quality mapping and visualisations, to support TfL and Mayoral priorities.
  • Develop innovative analytical approaches and bespoke tools to meet evolving project and stakeholder needs.
  • Work closely with the wider GIS team to improve geospatial dashboards, applications and shared datasets.
  • Work collaboratively with internal teams, borough officers, consultants and academic partners to share data, methods and insights.
  • Maintain awareness of new geospatial technologies, datasets and best practices, applying these to enhance analysis.
  • Support the team’s technical capability development by sharing skills and mentoring colleagues where appropriate.
  • Integrate and analyse complex geospatial datasets to derive actionable insights supporting key operational and strategic decisions across TfL.
  • Respond to ad-hoc analytical requests, providing quick-turnaround insights to operational colleagues when necessary.

Skills, knowledge & experience

Essential

  • Strong experience with GIS software (ArcGIS, QGIS) and web‑based GIS for complex spatial analysis.
  • Knowledge of ArcGIS Online (AGOL) and/or ArcGIS Enterprise.
  • Familiarity with tools such as Python, R or Power BI, and experience applying statistical methods to real‑world problems.
  • Strong communication skills — able to translate technical results into compelling visuals and clear messages for diverse audiences.
  • Adaptability in analytical approaches and outputs to suit different stakeholder needs.
  • Degree in GIS, Geography or related discipline (with a GIS component), or equivalent professional experience.
  • Knowledge of key spatial datasets relevant to London.

Beneficial

  • Understanding of project management processes and working in a public sector or political environment.
  • Awareness of London transport policy, travel behaviour influences, and related health and environmental challenges.
  • Experience representing an organisation externally, including with senior stakeholders.

Equality and diversity

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity. We welcome candidates from all backgrounds and do not discriminate on the basis of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, age or disability status. We want our team to reflect the diversity of Londoners — your perspective will help shape a better transport network for all.
