Performs advanced and specialized drafting, calculations and design work; performs field work; uses automated systems; learns specialized techniques; trains and reviews the work of others; others. Design activity is overseen by a licensed professional engineer or registered architect who has final approval authority for projects. May serve as lead worker. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.
Essential Duties:
Transportation Engineer Specialist I:
- Performs advanced and specialized design work.
- Performs advanced and specialized drafting and calculations in support of design activities; develops graphic presentations that include
distinctive design features. - Performs traffic engineering design work, analyzes traffic and accident data and recommends solutions for traffic
problems. - Prepares roadway design, traffic control, lighting, signal, and building plans.
- Reviews entire sets of plans for format, drafting and calculation errors and correlation of plans and specifications.
- Performs other job duties as assigned
Transportation Engineer Specialist II (In addition to the duties listed above):
- Writes general notes, specifications and provisions.
- Uses additional automated design tools or specialized design procedures in areas including bridge/culvert detailing, traffic management, geometric design, signal lighting design, retaining walls and building design.
Transportation Engineer Specialist III (In addition to the duties listed above):
- Receives project assignments, determines work requirements to complete project plans and coordinates scheduling to accommodate projects already underway.
- Prepares budget estimates.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.
Experience:
- Transportation Engineer Specialist I: 6 years drafting, design, plan preparation.
- Transportation Engineer Specialist II: 7 years drafting, design, plan preparation.
Transportation Engineer Specialist III: 8 years drafting, design, plan preparation.
Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent. Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

- Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
- Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and above 100 degrees for more than one hour
- Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools
- Kneeling-bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee(s)
- Crouching-bending body downward and forward by bending leg(s) and spine
- Reaching-extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction
- Standing-prolonged periods of time
- Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another
