Position Information

The Blackland Research & Extension Center in Temple, Texas is seeking a Research Associate or Senior Research Associate position depending on the candidate's qualifications. The Research Associate will aid in  the development and application of the agro-ecosystem framework in SWAT/SWAT+/HAWQS models; work effectively within a modeling group comprised of ARS, AgriLife, and other personnel; actively participate in joint research activities; effectively manage and complete assigned tasks; and assist in writing python/R programming scripts to optimize processing time, making the current decision support systems more efficient and reliable. The Senior Research Associate level will additionally involve leading in conducting modeling workshops for clients and lead in managing clients' communication, projects, and deliverables.

Required Qualifications:

The Research Associate requires a Master's degree in Ecology, agronomy, Geology, Environmental Science/Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related disciplines with emphasis on SWAT/SWAT+/HAWQS modeling or agro-ecosystem assessment. Or a Bachelor's degree in Ecology, agronomy, Geology, Environmental Science/Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related disciplines with emphasis on SWAT/SWAT+/HAWQS modeling or agro-ecosystem assessment and two years of related experience.

The Senior Research Associate requires a Master's degree in Ecology, agronomy, Geology, Environmental Science/Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related disciplines with emphasis on SWAT/SWAT+/HAWQS modeling or agro-ecosystem assessment and two years of related experience. Or a Bachelor's degree in Ecology, Agronomy, Geology, Environmental Science/Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related disciplines with emphasis on SWAT/SWAT+/HAWQS modeling or agro-ecosystem assessment and four years of related experience.

In addition to the required education and experience both positions require the additional qualifications:

  • Interdisciplinary teamwork skills with researchers across different disciplines.

  • Flexibility to perform work in a team or individually with supervision.

  • Good communication, interpersonal skills, professionalism, and competency.

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

Preferred Qualifications:

For both positions, the ideal candidate will have:

  • Knowledge of computer models for watershed assessment.

  • Knowledge of programming or scripting languages such as Python, Fortran, R, or others.

  • Experience in remote sensing data analysis and geographic information systems.

  • Experience in quantitative data analysis.

  • Strong writing and communication skills.

Salary: Compensation for this position is commensurate based on the selected candidate’s qualifications.

Position Funding: This position is grant funded and availability is contingent on grant funding.
