The Flavor Scientist leads the development, optimization, and validation of flavor systems for use in food, beverage, and dietary supplement products. This role partners closely with R&D, Quality, Regulatory, and Production teams to create innovative, compliant, and scalable flavor solutions. The Flavor Scientist applies advanced formulation knowledge, sensory science, and analytical techniques to drive flavor performance, consistency, and product differentiation.

Location: American Fork, UT (Onsite)
Pay: $65,000 – $80,000 (depending on experience)

Key Responsibilities

Lead the formulation, development, and optimization of flavor systems for new and existing products across multiple matrices.

Design and execute flavor compounding using essential oils, aroma chemicals, extracts, and natural/artificial flavor systems.

Conduct and interpret advanced sensory evaluations, including descriptive analysis and internal panel leadership.

Perform and analyze analytical testing (e.g., pH, refractive index, viscosity, solubility, stability) to assess flavor performance and shelf life.

Own documentation of formulations, batch records, and technical reports in compliance with GMP, GLP, and regulatory standards.

Partner with Regulatory and QA teams to ensure compliance with FEMA GRAS, CFR, and customer-specific requirements.

Support scale-up activities and production trials, troubleshooting flavor-related challenges during manufacturing.

Manage and curate the flavor library, including raw material selection, inventory control, and vendor collaboration.

Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior lab staff or technicians.

Collaborate cross-functionally with Product Development, Quality, and Operations to support commercialization timelines.

Maintain, calibrate, and validate lab equipment and instruments according to SOPs.

Identify opportunities for flavor innovation, cost optimization, and performance improvements.

 
QualificationsQualifications

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Food Science, Chemistry, Flavor Chemistry, or a related scientific field.

3–5+ years of experience in flavor development, food & beverage R&D, or dietary supplement formulation.

Strong hands-on experience with flavor compounding, essential oils, aroma chemicals, and flavor delivery systems.

Demonstrated sensory expertise with the ability to clearly describe, evaluate, and refine flavor profiles.

Working knowledge of flavor regulations, including FEMA GRAS, CFR, and labeling considerations.

Proficiency in MS Excel and Word; experience with LIMS or formulation software strongly preferred.

Strong project management, documentation, and organizational skills.

Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams.

Experience supporting scale-up, pilot runs, or commercialization activities is highly desirable.

Physical Requirements

Ability to stand for extended periods and perform detailed laboratory work.

Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.

Must be comfortable working in a laboratory environment with exposure to chemicals, aromas, and controlled biohazards.
