The Tech Inventory Engineering team:

  • Develops user-first tooling that tracks our global technology inventory to reduce loss, facilitate planning, and encourage re-use
  • Integrates with other systems to support day to day operations (e.g. breakfix)
  • Supports Target’s Enterprise Data Strategy to enable organization-wide, AI/ML-powered analytics

Prior experience with these technologies is helpful but not required.

As a Tech Inventory Engineering Senior Software Engineer, you will...

  • Architect, design, and develop solutions – supporting the Tech Inventory Engineering Technical Roadmap
  • Ensure the reliability, observability, and security of our products
  • Apply and maintain your knowledge of current and emerging technologies
  • Interface with partner teams to ensure we build the right solutions
    • Influence and support quality standards for the team throughout the process
  • Leverage and promote industry-standard verification & validation techniques/best practices including automated testing and behavior-driven development (BDD)
    • Design applications to facilitate testing
  • Mentor engineers, providing technical guidance to solve problems and correct errors
  • Support the product and participate in an on-call rotation (you can minimize support calls by driving quality)
  • Lead rigorous code reviews, establish CI/CD standards, and mentor other engineers to elevate the team’s overall technical capability

About you:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years of software development experience
    • Fluent in object-oriented languages and design (e.g., Kotlin, C++, C#, Java, Groovy, Python)
    • Familiar with TypeScript/JavaScript web frameworks (e.g., React, Next.js, Vue)
    • Experience data modeling for REST and several data stores (SQL and NoSQL)
  • Rapidly experiments with solutions to ensure feasibility
  • Executes test first development to ensure you are building the right thing
  • Resolves routine and non-routine technical issues with minimal assistance
  • Collaborates with other engineers to design and develop solutions
  • Eager to explore and experiment with new technologies as the industry evolves
    • Ability to rapidly gain proficiency in new technologies
  • Influences and applies data standards, policies, and procedures
  • Advocates for best practices in software development, including design, testing, and observability
  • Unafraid to jump into unknown tech stacks (e.g., Go, Python, Javascript)
  • Leverages AI tooling effectively to improve your designs, code, and tests, discerning when the result is or is not relevant

  • MongoDB and/or PostgreSQL
  • Next.js, TypeScript, Jest, Cypress
  • Domain experience with inventory, asset, or warehouse management systems
  • Passionate about automating day-to-day processes to drive efficiency

This position will operate as a Hybrid/Flex for Your Day work arrangement based on Target’s needs. A Hybrid/Flex for Your Day work arrangement means the team member’s core role will need to be performed both onsite at the Target HQ MN location the role is assigned to and virtually, depending upon what your role, team, and tasks require for that day.
