About this role

About the role

You will work as part of a trusted and experienced team to drive innovation across on-prem, private cloud, and public cloud environments, with a strong focus on automation, stability, security, and cost efficiency. The team builds and operates self-service database platforms for Swiss Re business units, enabling reliable and scalable database services at enterprise scale.

The Database as a Service (DBaaS) squad is looking for a Database Engineer who can take technical ownership of database platforms and actively shape their long-term evolution. The role combines engineering, operations, and platform responsibility, working on backlog items within an agile setup to deliver predictable and sustainable outcomes.

Operational on-call coverage is limited (approximately once every two months and decreasing as the team grows) and applies only to high-priority incidents. The team follows a “you build it, you run it” philosophy and actively strives to automate operational activities wherever possible.

About you

Nobody meets 100% of the requirements — and that’s perfectly fine. If you meet the core qualifications below and are genuinely interested in enterprise database platforms, multi-cloud environments, and automation, we would be happy to meet you.

You will join a highly skilled, dedicated, and cross-functional database team located between Bratislava and Zürich, within the Global Technology Services department.

Minimum qualifications

  • Experience designing and operating complex database environments in cloud or private cloud settings, preferably on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure
  • Strong understanding of Oracle databases in RAC environments, preferably on Exadata
  • Good understanding of PostgreSQL database internals
  • Deep understanding of SQL performance tuning and optimization in Oracle and PostgreSQL
  • Experience supporting mission-critical database platforms, including high availability, replication, backup and recovery, and operational readiness
  • Experience with scripting and automation (Shell/Bash, PL/SQL, Python)
  • Experience taking technical ownership of database platforms, including design decisions, operational trade-offs, and long-term sustainability
  • Experience developing automation and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) for database platforms
  • Strong attention to detail, quality-oriented mindset, and solution-focused approach
  • Hands-on attitude with a willingness to continuously learn and improve
  • Proficiency in English, both written and spoken

Nice to have qualifications

  • One or more Oracle certifications
  • One or more Microsoft Azure certifications
  • Exposure to CI/CD pipelines for database-related changes
  • Knowledge of or interest in AIOps, machine learning, or statistical modeling

In this role, you will

  • Take technical ownership of enterprise and mission-critical database platforms
  • Influence architecture, HA/DR strategies, and operational standards
  • Act as a technical point of contact for complex database topics and escalations
  • Support and guide other engineers through technical challenges
  • Work closely with international and geographically distributed teams
  • Share knowledge, ideas, and best practices across the team
  • Maintain a strong customer orientation and understanding of business requirements
  • Proactively identify risks, issues, and opportunities during backlog refinement
  • Coordinate with your team to support hybrid working arrangements
  • Operate with integrity and strong ethical standards
