About this role

STV is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Geotechnical & Tunneling Engineering Intern to join our  team. This internship offers an opportunity for undergraduate and graduate-level candidates to work alongside our experienced team, learn, and contribute to meaningful projects. This hybrid position requires at least 3 days a week in the office. Preference will be given to those who can participate in the internship for at least 3 months.

In this role, you will gain hands-on experience working on heavy civil underground structures such as cut-and-cover and mined tunnels, caverns, shafts, and underground facilities, including substations and treatment facilities, throughout the United States. You will be involved in the planning, organization, development, supervision, and interpretation of geotechnical investigations; this includes drilling/boring programs, laboratory testing, field/slope mapping, and excavation/tunnel mapping for the design and construction of slopes, embankments, retaining structures, excavation support systems, tunnel support systems, and foundations.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the design of tunnels, earth retention systems, rock and soil slopes, and deep foundations.
  • Contribute to the design and support of rock and soil tunnels using numerical and empirical methods.
  • Support the development and implementation of geotechnical subsurface exploration plans.
  • Help prepare geotechnical data reports, interpretive reports, baseline reports, and design reports.
  • Interpret geology, geotechnical, and hydrologic conditions to understand their impact on design and construction.
  • Aid in the preparation of proposals and assimilation of geotechnical reports.
  • Supervise drill crews on routine projects and conduct Phase I Environmental Site Assessments (ESA’s) with guidance.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned to support project goals and team objectives.

Required:

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related field at an ABET-accredited University or NCEES equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge in Geotechnical Data Reports (GDR).
  • Experience with PLAXIS 2D and 3D and ITASCA software (FLAC 2D and UDEC).
  • Experience in rock and soil logging, rock tunnel mapping, and subsurface investigations.
  • Experience in the architecture/engineering/construction management industry.

Compensation Range:

$46,713.00 - $62,284.00
