About this role

STV is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Rail/ Vehicle Systems Engineering Intern to join our team. This internship offers an opportunity for undergraduate and graduate-level candidates to work alongside our experienced team, learn, and contribute to meaningful projects. This hybrid position requires at least 3 days a week in the office. Preference will be given to those who can participate in the internship for at least 3 months.

In this role, you can gain real-world engineering design and production of planning, construction bid documents, and technical tasks. We are looking for a candidate with a strong interest in rail transportation and is seeking to learn rail design fundamentals under the direction of experienced engineers. The rail industry is fast paced and there is the opportunity to work on a variety of project types in multiple geographies.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in designing rail alignments, drainage systems, grading, and other rail infrastructure using Microstation and AutoCAD.

  • Participate in planning, design, and construction projects related to rail systems.

  • Support the development of construction documents, including drawings and specifications.

  • Assist in preparing technical design reports, calculations, and memos.

  • Conduct field inspections periodically to gather data and ensure project compliance.

  • Conduct research to support the development of design solutions for rail systems.

  • Review various plans and construction submittals for projects located on or adjacent to railroad right-of-way.

  • Perform structural and track design reviews for railway clients.

  • Maintain organization and manage multiple project and submittal types simultaneously.

  • Coordinate with field engineers and personnel to provide on-site support services and ensure contractors adhere to approved plans and construction submittals.

  • Perform design calculations for new and existing bridges, retaining walls, culverts, and other transportation-related structures.

  • Perform additional tasks assigned by the supervisor to bolster project goals and team objectives.

Required:

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in civil engineering or a related-field at an ABET-accredited University or NCEES equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience using Microstation, InRoads, OpenRoads/Rail and/or AutoCAD Civil3D.

  • Railway bridge or track design experience.

  • Strong working knowledge of various State and local entities specifications and preferences.

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Access, Mathcad, Bluebeam, LARSA, LeapBridge, and/or HEC-RAS.

  • Experience in the architecture/engineering/construction management industry.

Compensation Range:

$40,874.00 - $54,498.00
