About this role

Position Summary 

The San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department is seeking highly motivated individuals to serve as Public Outreach Ambassadors for the “LoveDolores" and public affairs outreach and engagement projects. Ambassadors will support projects related to Leave No Trace principles, environmental conservation, waste reduction, wildlife and coyote coexistence education, park stewardship, and will conduct outreach and public engagement on park-related matters with visitors and community members.


LoveDolores is a Leave No Trace (LNT) campaign located at Mission Dolores Park, one of the most iconic parks in San Francisco. Through on-site outreach, education, and events, the public outreach ambassador will work to reduce litter at Dolores Park and encourage park visitors to become better stewards.


Ambassadors will lead on-site education and community outreach efforts, engaging park visitors and sharing information. They may also support programming and events in other parks, connect with visitors, and help strengthen relationships between communities and their neighborhood parks. All work advances the Recreation and Park Department’s mission to provide enriching recreational opportunities, maintain beautiful and safe parks, and steward the environment for the well-being of San Francisco’s diverse communities.


Ambassadors will collaborate on responsibilities, including on-site engagement and general duties. Desired qualifications include experience using social media to support outreach and engagement efforts, as well as demonstrated ability to engage community members in a public-facing environment. This role operates under the supervision of the Policy and Public Affairs division.

This job requires working in the parks on Saturday and Sunday, and in the office Tuesdays and Wednesdays (additional days flexible/as needed). Holiday and Pride weekends are required.


Possible Schedule

○    Monday: OFF (except holidays including Memorial Day and Labor Day)

○    Tuesday: 10am-4pm (Golden Gate Park Office)

○    Wednesday: 10am-4pm (Golden Gate Park Office)

○    Thursday: OFF

○    Friday: OFF

○    Saturday: 12pm-4pm (Dolores or another park)

○    Sunday: 12pm-4pm (Dolores or another park)



Key Duties and Responsibilities 

General Duties

  • Conduct direct, public-facing interactions in Dolores Park and other park sites to educate visitors and foster positive relationships with park users.
  • Provide education on Leave No Trace principles, wildlife and coyote coexistence, and park stewardship practices.
  • Collaborate with park staff to identify issues and support a safe, welcoming park environment.
  • Work closely with the Policy & Public Affairs Division and other Recreation and Park Department divisions on outreach and engagement initiatives.
  • Monitor, track, and evaluate outreach activities to inform program improvements and future engagement strategies.

On-Site Engagement

  • Develop working knowledge of local culture, history, and park context to support effective public engagement.
  • Conduct park-use surveys to assess visitor behavior, waste patterns, and sources of litter.
  • Collect and analyze data; prepare reports, presentations, and outreach materials that promote Leave No Trace and coexistence messaging.
  • Educate and engage park visitors on environmental challenges, conservation needs, and responsible park use.
  • Assist in the development and placement of educational and informational materials in parks.

Social Media & Digital Outreach

  • Support management of Department social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and X (Twitter), to increase reach and engagement.
  • Develop and produce engaging digital content calendar with preapproved content that communicates key park messages in a clear and accessible manner.
  • Respond professionally and appropriately to public inquiries, including complex or sensitive questions.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of social media strategies for special campaigns and events, including promotional giveaways.

Partnership & Community Engagement

  • Build and maintain relationships with local businesses, nonprofit organizations, neighborhood groups, and other stakeholders.
  • Assist in planning and coordinating stewardship, restoration, and community engagement events. • Train and support volunteer groups, including facilitation of groups of up to 50 participants.
  • Support expansion of outreach and engagement programming to additional city parks.
  • Assist with planning and implementation of targeted cleanup and stewardship events following large-scale public gatherings and holidays.

Required Qualifications 

  • Age 21+
  • Bay Area resident
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to approach and interact with diverse populations.
  • Must have a genuine passion for community engagement, environmental conservation, and public service.
  • Able to work weekends and outdoors in inclement weather.
  • Able to stand for 3-4 hours at a time, lift heavy boxes, walk hills, and be physically active.
  • Positive attitude and willingness to be flexible.

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Detail-oriented, dependable, self-motivated. Can work both independently & collaboratively.
  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Graphic design skills using Adobe Suite and Canva are highly desired.
  • Ability to follow direction and take initiative as needed.
  • Comfortable being in large crowds and talking one-on-one with park visitors.
  • Able to respond to unforeseen challenges and address difficult situations.
  • Creative and critical thinking skills.
  • Currently obtaining or has a B.A. or B.S.
  • Valid CA Driving License.
  • Bilingual (Spanish or Chinese)

Compensation  

Living allowance = $460/week (paid biweekly)

All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
