A Brief Overview
Supervises the day-to-day operation of the hospital laboratory on evening and night shifts. Models and upholds the Stormont Vail Tenets. Assists in selecting, training, evaluation and motivation of team members, along with promoting positive morale. Works closely with other laboratory personnel, Patient Care Services staff, and healthcare providers to produce high quality and timely laboratory results.

Education Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree Medical (Clinical) Laboratory Science, Biology, Chemistry, or a related field. Required


Experience Qualifications

  • 2 years Laboratory experience. Required


Skills and Abilities

  • Follows all applicable OSHA guidelines. Follows all hospital and departmental safety procedures. (Required proficiency)
  • Proficient in scientific principles, procedures, and protocols. (Required proficiency)
  • Ability to organize work and establish priorities. (Required proficiency)
  • Strong attention to detail. (Required proficiency)
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret graphs. (Required proficiency)
  • Ability to follow directions accurately. (Required proficiency)


Licenses and Certifications

  • Medical Laboratory Scientist - ASCP Certification by AMT or NCA is also accepted. Required or
  • Single discipline technologist or specialist certification in Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, Molecular Biology, or Microbiology may be considered depending on the position is required.


What you will do

  • Fulfills essential duties and responsibilities of a Medical Laboratory Scientist.
  • Provide day-to-day supervision of laboratory staff and laboratory test performance. In conjunction with senior leadership, interviews and recommends applicants for hire. Conducts annual performance appraisals and oversees competency assessments of team members. Interprets and implements departmental and organizational policies and keeps team members advised in advance of changes.
  • Prepares work schedule. Adjusts daily schedule and individual work assignments and coordinates cross training as required for efficient utilization of personnel. Monitor key indicators and quality systems for their shift.
  • Reports the status of the shift/section to laboratory leadership. Identifies problems and deficiencies with staffing or equipment. Reports on feeling and attitudes of the team. Looks for opportunities to improve operations.
  • Supports the Laboratory’s Quality Improvement efforts by initiating action to prevent the occurrence of nonconformance related to testing, processing and quality systems. Facilitates participation of team members in the laboratory's proficiency testing program.
  • Review all nonconformance, complaints, corrective and preventive actions. Evaluate and document performance.
  • Assists in maintaining adequate supplies and equipment for the shift.
  • Provides education and training to new team members, students and interns. Provides a welcoming environment to learners by practicing open communication, constructive feedback tailored to specific behaviors, goal-setting, and competency evaluation. Assists learners with documentation of training and competency.
  • Ensures compliance of team members with safety procedures in laboratory and hospital policies.
  • Anticipates grievance whenever possible and addresses dissatisfaction promptly and fairly in an effort to foster operations and team spirit. Applies policies equitably with all team members.
  • Assists section supervisors in meeting standards set forth by CLIA, JCAHO, CAP and other governing bodies.
  • Promotes team members' continuing education.
