POSITION SUMMARY
The Health & Safety Advisor supports the day-to-day operations of a facility by ensuring compliance with company and regulatory safety requirements. This hands-on role works closely with plant leadership and employees to promote a strong safety culture through visible presence, practical solutions, and proactive risk management.
responsibilities
Site Oversight & Inspections
- Conducts daily yard and plant condition inspections.
- Performs spot checks of Powered Industrial Equipment (PIE) operators for pre-use inspections, safe operation, and compliance.
- Monitors staff PPE use and safety signage to ensure compliance with standards.
- Maintains a visible presence in the facility as a key point of contact for Health & Safety.
- Proactively involves themselves in all site activities that could impact Health & Safety.
- Conducts safety audits, walkthroughs, and employee interviews.
Program & Document Management
- Develops, reviews, and maintains Job Hazard Assessments (JHAs), Safe Operating Procedures (SOPs), and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) programs.
- Updates and manages Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and maintains site-specific safety manuals.
- Oversees PPE inventory and ordering.
- Maintains health & safety communication boards and ensures document accessibility.
Staff & Contractor Engagement
- Delivers new hire safety onboarding and required training.
- Supports contractor onboarding and oversees compliance with health & safety standards.
- Co-chairs Joint Health & Safety Committees and facilitates regular safety meetings.
Emergency & Incident Response
- Plans, coordinates, and documents emergency drills.
- Investigates incidents and near misses; documents findings including observations and corrective actions.
- Participates in injury claim management and return-to-work planning.
- Supports Plant Managers and HR in monitoring open Workers’ Compensation claims, ensuring timely communication and action.
Regulatory Compliance & Continuous Improvement
- Monitors changes to provincial health and safety legislation and ensures site compliance.
- Develops, implements, and improves health and safety programs, standards, and procedures.
- Participates in ongoing professional development and attends safety-related training sessions and seminars.
Additional Responsibilities
- Supports project and job site activities to ensure health and safety requirements are met.
- Carries out other duties in support of operational goals, as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Education: Post-Secondary education in Health and Safety or combination of education and experience is preferred.
- Years of experience: Minimum 5 years of Health & Safety experience in experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Languages: Proficiency in English, spoken and written.
- Licenses/certifications:

- Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), Certified Health and Safety Consultant (CHSC), or equivalent designation is considered an asset.
- Additional certifications such as First Aid/CPR, WHMIS, Confined Space, or Train-the-Trainer are preferred.
- Valid Driver’s License.

- Able to complete incident data tracking, and analysis, and KPI reporting.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Familiarity with safety management software is an asset.
- Strong time management and organizational skills.
- Capable of managing multiple priorities.
- Ability to maintains documentation in line with internal and regulatory requirements.
