Job Description

Location: District 4, Ottawa County Health Department

Salary: up to $15.74 an hour based on education and experience

Full Time /Part Time: Part time

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday

Primary Hours: 8AM -5PM

Position Description: 

  • Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities for providing interpreter work required for the spoken word and/or translator work for the written word in a state institution, school, or agency. Services are provided to remove communication barriers and facilitate effective two-way understanding of information.

Position Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

  • Interprets and translations for children and adult clients or staff to communicate subject matter, educational information, and/or personal information.
  • Use knowledge of the agency, services, and client to successfully communicate.
  • Interpreters work in person, via the telephone, via virtual or electronic methods.
  • Translators focus on accuracy, text, and using technology, research, and reference materials with limited direction. Translates print and digital communication materials.
  • Interprets and /or translates Spanish to English, English to Spanish.
  • Interpreters focus on understanding and communication relying on their memory, experience, quick reflexes, non-verbal cues, including facial expressions and tone.
  • Performs work at hearings, direct and indirect client or patient interaction, community events, agency settings, client’s homes, and other venues as needed.
  • Coordinates and participates in appointments with staff, contractors, and clients.
  • Accompany clients or is present at medical, legal, or business appointments, job interviews, counseling sessions and meetings to communicate services.
  • The incumbent is responsible for assuring the timely and accurate completion of requests from throughout the agency.
  • Serves as a cultural mediator and works to eliminate disparities through the development of partnerships in minority populations and community agencies.
  • Aids and educates co-workers by teaching interpreter and/or translator techniques and knowledge.
  • Being present in the office is an essential function of this job.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Other Duties

  • Demonstrates knowledge of and supports mission, vision, value statements, standards, policies and procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality standards, and the code of ethical behavior.
  • Works effectively in team environment, participating and assisting their peers.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • One year Experience interpreting and/or translating English to Spanish, Spanish to English, Spanish to English. Ability to read, write and speak English and Spanish.

Valued Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of interpreting and translating techniques; roles, ethics, and advocacy in health, social services, business and community settings, or other services provided by the State of Oklahoma; English, Spanish.

  • Ability to listen, comprehend, read, write, and speak English, Spanish; apply grammar rules in order to properly interpret and/or translate; independently follow established protocols; encourage respondents to answer questions, probe and clarify if needed; and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Work is typically performed in an office setting with climate-controlled settings and exposure to moderate noise levels.  While performing the duties of the job, employees are required to talk, stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms; carry light items; drive an automobile. This position requires long periods of sitting and daily use of computers and phones. Applicants must be willing to perform all job-related travel associated with this position. Occasionally, in state overnight and weekend travel may be required. Being present at the office is an essential function of the job.
