Description of Work

This position will function as a Vehicle/Equipment Repair Technician Ill at the Castle Hayne Equipment Shop located in New Hanover County. This position will perform at the highest level of diagnostics and most complex repairs to small engine, automotive, and heavy equipment. Employees perform a wide range of tasks involving services and repair of mechanical systems of gasoline/diesel powered automotive and heavy equipment. Employees may perform mechanical work at various levels. Work assignments vary in complexity depending on the type of mechanical system. Must be able to perform Preventive Maintenance and advanced skilled mechanical work on a variety of systems including Electrical Systems (Starting/Charging/Lighting, Etc.), Cooling Systems, Fuel System, Hydraulic System, Air/Hydraulic Brake Systems, and Tires/Rims. Employees may mentor lower-level employees, training and assisting with diagnosing and repairs using our most advanced diagnostic equipment. VERT Ill employees are assigned additional responsibilities by supervisors that will include safety-related inspections/audits, inventory management (example: parts, fuel, and lube commodities), and required additional training.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade: NC10 / Salary Range: $41,655 - $72,897 

Management prefers applicants with the following: 

•    Experience in performing preventive maintenance on a minimum of two of the following: light, medium, heavy-duty trucks, and heavy equipment
•    Experience in Heating and A/C repairs including electronic and vacuum controls
•    Experience in performing electrical/ electronic diagnostics and repair of complex wiring on two of the following; light, medium, heavy duty trucks and heavy equipment
•    Experience in performing hydraulic system diagnostics, repairs, and rebuilds on a variety of equipment
•    Experience in troubleshooting and repair of a minimum of two of the following; light, medium, heavy duty or farm equipment brake components
•    Experience in inventory management including parts, fuel and lube commodities.

Additional Expectations: 

Position requires work during any adverse weather such as snow and/or ice, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc. which can lead to working extended daily hours, weekends, and holidays. Should have the ability to perform duties of position in accordance with all safety regulations; prepare and maintain paperwork essential to employment, equipment repair, inventory, and service records; understand both written and oral instructions; move parts and material necessary to repair and maintain equipment; and safely operate equipment for testing purposes. Ability to demonstrate commitment to provide safe working environment by leading by example. Ability to read and interpret Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) manuals) 


Note: Employee is required to furnish a complete set of mechanic tools. 

The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Class A 

Commercial Driver's License with N endorsement on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement 
(ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. 

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation. 
 

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three (3) years of experience in the area of assignment, or a sufficient year- for-year combination of education and experience in the repair work to which assigned, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualifications May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F.
